Andaman vs Gulf Coast Thai Provinces: Companies and Revenue 2026
In short
The Gulf coast dwarfs the Andaman coast, with 417,567 registered companies against 75,171 as of 17 July 2026. Gulf revenue is 15.19 trillion baht, about 20.5 times the Andaman total of 741.36 billion baht. Strip out the eastern industrial belt and the gap in revenue per firm shrinks to 1.57 times. Phuket, with 52,557 companies, earns the least per firm of all 21 provinces.
Which coast is bigger, and by how much?
The Gulf coast is bigger on every count. Its 15 provinces hold 417,567 registered companies, or 20.99 percent of the national total of 1,989,709 (DBD, 2026). The six Andaman provinces hold 75,171, which is 3.78 percent. In revenue the gap widens to a factor of 20.5. Gulf firms report 15.19 trillion baht, or 18.95 percent of the national 80.15 trillion. Andaman firms report 741.36 billion baht, or 0.93 percent. Revenue per firm follows the same order at 36.37 million baht on the Gulf against 9.86 million on the Andaman side. Most of that gap comes from four provinces: Samut Prakan, Chon Buri, Rayong and Samut Sakhon.

Tourism coast, commodity coast, and the surprise in Phuket
Phuket is the famous name, and its registry footprint is real. It has 52,557 companies, 69.92 percent of everything registered on the Andaman coast. Yet those firms report 404.45 billion baht, which is 7.70 million baht each and the lowest figure among all 21 provinces. Surat Thani has fewer firms at 40,161 but reports 412.32 billion baht, so it out-earns Phuket in total revenue by 1.9 percent and by 1.33 times per firm. Songkhla reports 657.22 billion baht from 28,543 firms, which is 23.03 million baht each and 2.99 times the Phuket figure. The rest of the Andaman coast, meaning Krabi, Trang, Phang-nga, Ranong and Satun, earns 14.90 million baht per firm, 1.94 times Phuket. A crowded tourism register is full of small operators, and the registry shows it.
Why this matters
Comparing coasts by headline totals flatters the Gulf for the wrong reason. Five provinces of the Gulf seaboard, Chon Buri, Rayong and the three Samut provinces, carry 291,213 companies and 13.23 trillion baht. Remove them and the ten remaining Gulf provinces earn 15.47 million baht per firm, only 1.57 times the Andaman average. The southern Gulf provinces from Chumphon to Narathiwat land at 15.85 million baht. So the real divide is not sea against sea. It is factory belt against everyone else. For a lender, a supplier or a site planner, Phuket's company count says little about deal size. Surat Thani and Songkhla, the commodity and trade provinces of the south, hand each registered firm a larger revenue base than Thailand's best-known island.
Definitions
- Revenue per company
- Total reported revenue of a province divided by its number of registered companies.
- Andaman coast
- The six provinces on the Andaman Sea: Ranong, Phang-nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun.
- Gulf coast
- The 15 provinces on the Gulf of Thailand used here, from Trat in the east to Narathiwat in the far south, excluding Bangkok and Chachoengsao.
- Registered company
- A juristic person listed in the DBD registry, whether or not it is currently trading.
Assumptions
- Companies are assigned to the province of their registered office, which may differ from where they operate.
- Revenue covers only companies that filed a financial statement, while the count covers all registered companies, so revenue per company is a conservative figure.
- Coast groupings are the author's choice. Bangkok and Chachoengsao are left out, and moving them would change the Gulf totals.
- Head offices of large groups can sit in a province far from their plants, which can inflate or deflate a province.
Methodology
Figures come from the Department of Business Development registry aggregates by province of registered office, with rows computed on 17 July 2026 and reported as of that date. Andaman coast means Ranong, Phang-nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun. Gulf coast means Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Trat, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Pattani and Narathiwat. Bangkok and Chachoengsao are excluded from both. Revenue is total reported revenue of companies with a filed statement, so revenue per company divides by all registered companies and understates firms that file. Shares use the national totals of 1,989,709 companies and 80,146,498,562,464 baht.
How we verified this
- Andaman companies: 52,557 + 7,793 + 6,033 + 4,027 + 2,651 + 2,110 = 75,171. Share of national 75,171 / 1,989,709 = 3.78 percent.
- Gulf companies: sum of 15 provinces = 417,567. Share 417,567 / 1,989,709 = 20.99 percent.
- Revenue ratio: 15,186.14 / 741.36 billion baht = 20.48. Gulf share 15,186.14 / 80,146.50 = 18.95 percent. Andaman share 741.36 / 80,146.50 = 0.93 percent.
- Revenue per firm: Andaman 741.36 billion / 75,171 = 9.86 million baht. Gulf 15,186.14 billion / 417,567 = 36.37 million baht.
- Phuket share of Andaman: 52,557 / 75,171 = 69.92 percent. Phuket per firm 404.45 billion / 52,557 = 7.70 million baht.
- Surat Thani versus Phuket: 412.32 / 404.45 = 1.019 in revenue and 10.27 / 7.70 = 1.33 per firm. Songkhla 23.03 / 7.70 = 2.99.
- Andaman excluding Phuket: 741.36 minus 404.45 = 336.91 billion baht over 22,614 firms = 14.90 million baht. 14.90 / 7.70 = 1.94.
- Gulf excluding Chon Buri, Rayong and three Samut provinces: 126,354 firms, 1,954.66 billion baht, 15.47 million baht per firm. 15.47 / 9.86 = 1.57. The five excluded provinces hold 291,213 firms and 13,231.47 billion baht.
- Southern Gulf six provinces: 95,735 firms, 1,517.85 billion baht, 15.85 million baht per firm.
