Is Thailand's filing base keeping pace with company formation?

No, and the gap has been widening for almost two decades. Between 2007 and 2025 the number of companies filing a financial statement each year grew at a compound annual rate of 4.65 percent, rising from 315,278 to 713,946 (DBD, 2026). New company registrations grew at 8.38 percent a year over the same span, rising from 30,227 to 128,617. That is 1.8 times the filing growth rate. New companies equaled 9.59 percent of that year's filing count in 2007. By 2025 that ratio had climbed to 18.01 percent. Formation is not just outpacing filing. It is pulling further ahead each year.

Company count filing a financial statement compared with new company registrations, as of 7 Jul 2026.

The 2025 divergence

Look at the final year alone. Filings fell 2.2 percent, from 730,001 in 2024 to 713,946 in 2025, the only decline anywhere in the 19 year series. New company formation moved the opposite way, rising 5.72 percent, from 121,657 to 128,617. That is a swing of nearly 8 percentage points inside a single year. Part of the 2025 filing count may still be catching up. Companies get months after their fiscal year end to file, so late filings can still land after this data was pulled on 7 Jul 2026. Even allowing for that lag, the direction of travel is clear. Registrations are accelerating again after their 2022 and 2023 pullback, and the filing base has not shown the same reacceleration.

Why this matters

Every company that registers today becomes a future data point for regulators, lenders and researchers, but only once it starts filing. A widening gap between formation and filing means Thailand's compliance base is thinner, relative to the pool of companies that exist, than it was in 2007. Nationally, only 1,263,354 of the 1,989,709 companies on the register have ever filed a financial statement, 63.5 percent (DBD, 2026). If new formation keeps growing near 8 percent a year while filing grows near 5 percent, that 63.5 percent coverage ratio will keep drifting down rather than up. For anyone using DBD filings to size an industry, screen a supplier or study Thai corporate performance, the message is blunt. A rising count of registered companies each year does not translate one for one into a rising count of companies you can actually see the numbers for.

Definitions

Compound annual growth rate
The steady yearly growth rate that would take a starting value to an ending value over a set number of years, treating growth as compounding rather than as a simple average of yearly changes.
Filing base
The count of companies that filed a financial statement for a given statement year, as reported to the DBD registry.
Statement year
The accounting year a filed financial statement covers, recorded in the source data using the Buddhist calendar, where 2568 equals calendar year 2025.
Founding year
The calendar year in which a company was newly registered with the DBD, used to measure the flow of new company formation.

Assumptions

Methodology

Filing counts come from market_year_insight, the count of companies with a filed financial statement for each statement year, converted from the Buddhist calendar used in the source table, for example statement year 2568 equals calendar 2025. New company counts come from market_new_companies_insight, grouped by founding year, which is already Gregorian. Both series exclude their most recent year, statement year 2569 and founding year 2026, because both are partial years still accumulating filings and registrations as of the 7 July 2026 data pull. Growth rates are compound annual growth rates computed across the 18 year span from 2007 to 2025. All figures are drawn from the DBD registry via the Max Data Insights aggregate tables as of 7 July 2026.
