Which industry is the most profitable?
Ranked by net margin, financial and insurance leads Thailand with 26.9 percent (DBD, 2026), well clear of the field. Finance stands apart. The high-volume trading and building sectors keep very little of each baht of revenue.

Reading the margins with care
The financial and insurance figure deserves a caveat. Banks and insurers recognise interest and premium income differently from a trading company, so their reported margin looks unusually high next to a retailer that books the full value of goods sold. The broader pattern still holds across the rest of the table. Sectors that sell expertise or control scarce assets, such as professional services, mining and utilities, keep more of each baht than sectors that move large volumes of goods at low markup.
Definitions
- Net margin
- Net profit as a share of revenue. A ten percent margin means ten satang of profit for every baht of revenue.
- Aggregate margin
- Total sector net profit divided by total sector revenue, rather than the average of each company's own margin.
Assumptions
- Only companies that filed a financial statement contribute to the margin.
- Financial-sector revenue recognition differs from other sectors, so its margin is not directly comparable.
Methodology
Net margin is aggregate net profit divided by aggregate revenue for all companies in a section that have filed a financial statement, drawn from the DBD registry as of 2 July 2026. Sections shown are limited to those with at least several thousand reporting companies so the ratio is stable. Margins are section-wide aggregates, not simple averages of individual company margins.
How we verified this
- Financial and insurance was confirmed as the maximum net margin in the section table at 26.9 percent.
- Sections were re-sorted by net margin and the descending order was checked against the published table.
- Wholesale and retail was confirmed as the lowest margin among the large sectors at 1.4 percent.
