Thailand vs Taiwan: Company Registry Size in 2026
In short
Thailand's company register held 1,989,709 businesses as of 17 July 2026. Taiwan's register held 812,230 businesses at the end of June 2026. Thailand's total runs about 2.4 times Taiwan's. Thailand's population runs about 70.3 million. Taiwan's is 23.3 million. Thailand's population is roughly three times Taiwan's, so the raw gap looks proportional. Divide by population instead and the story flips. Taiwan carries 34.9 registered companies per 1,000 residents. Thailand carries 28.3. Taiwan's rate runs 23 percent higher. Divide by land area and the gap turns stark. Taiwan packs nearly six times as many companies into every square kilometer.
How does Thailand's registry compare with Taiwan's?
Thailand's company register held 1,989,709 businesses as of 17 July 2026, according to the DBD-sourced aggregate (DBD, 2026). Taiwan's company register held 812,230 businesses at the end of June 2026, according to Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA, 2026). Thailand's total is 2.4 times Taiwan's in raw terms. That looks like a fair result once population enters the picture. Thailand counted about 70.3 million residents at its 2025 census (National Statistical Office, 2025). Taiwan counted 23.3 million residents at the end of 2025 (National Statistics, 2026). Thailand's population is 3.0 times Taiwan's. That is close to the 2.4 times gap in company count. Divide companies by residents and Taiwan actually pulls ahead. Thailand carries 28.3 registered companies for every 1,000 people. Taiwan carries 34.9 despite its far smaller population. That rate runs 23 percent higher than Thailand's.

Why this matters
A raw company count is a poor yardstick on its own, and this pair proves it twice over. Thailand's register looks 2.4 times bigger than Taiwan's. Thailand also holds 3.0 times the people. It holds 14.3 times the land, so none of that makes the bigger number a surprising outcome by itself. What is notable is that Taiwan still edges ahead once population enters the calculation. Taiwan runs 34.9 companies per 1,000 residents. Thailand runs 28.3. Taiwan's population slipped slightly over 2025, easing to about 23.3 million. Its registry still runs denser than a country with a growing population three times its size. Land area sharpens the point further. Taiwan packs 22,574 registered companies into every 1,000 square kilometers. Thailand packs just 3,878. That gap runs nearly six to one. A small, dense, trade oriented island economy simply generates more registered legal entities per person and per hectare than a larger, more agrarian one does, and no amount of population math closes that gap. For anyone sizing a market from a registry count alone, that is the warning worth carrying forward. Scale the number to the economy behind it before treating it as a measure of business density.
Definitions
- Registered company
- In Thailand, any juristic person on file with the Department of Business Development, whether currently active or dormant, unless formally deregistered. In Taiwan, any company with a live registration under the Company Act, tracked by the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
- Companies per 1,000 residents
- Registry density measured against population: the registered company count of a jurisdiction divided by its population, multiplied by 1,000, used here to compare registry size independent of population.
- Companies per 1,000 square kilometers
- Registry density measured against land area: the registered company count of a jurisdiction divided by its land area in square kilometers, multiplied by 1,000, used here to compare registry size independent of how much territory a country covers.
- Land area
- The total surface area of a country, land and inland water included, as reported by the CIA World Factbook. It is used here as a fixed denominator rather than a measure of usable business land.
Assumptions
- Thailand's registered company figure includes both active and dormant companies still on file with the DBD, so it is not net of the same kind of removal process every jurisdiction applies.
- Taiwan's registered company figure covers companies under the Company Act as tracked by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, which may not capture every business form counted in a broader national enterprise census.
- Population figures use Thailand's 2025 census date and Taiwan's end of 2025 estimate, and land area figures come from a single common source, the CIA World Factbook, to keep the two country comparisons on the same basis.
- The snapshot dates are about one month apart, 17 July 2026 for Thailand and 30 June 2026 for Taiwan, a small gap next to the scale of the comparison.
Methodology
Thailand figures are drawn from the DBD-sourced market_national_insight aggregate table as of 17 July 2026. Registered companies means every juristic person on file with Thailand's Department of Business Development, active or dormant, unless formally deregistered. Taiwan figures are drawn from the Ministry of Economic Affairs' official company registration statistics for June 2026, covering companies with a live registration under Taiwan's Company Act, published through the Executive Yuan's gender statistics database and used here only for the grand total by county and city. Population figures come from Thailand's 2025 Population and Housing Census and Taiwan's year end 2025 population statistics. Land area for both places comes from the CIA World Factbook. Companies per 1,000 residents and per 1,000 square kilometers are each jurisdiction's registered company count divided by population or land area, multiplied by 1,000.
How we verified this
- Raw size gap: 1,989,709 divided by 812,230 equals 2.4497, so Thailand's register is about 2.4 times Taiwan's.
- Population gap: 70,300,000 divided by 23,299,132 equals 3.0173, so Thailand's population is about 3.0 times Taiwan's.
- Land area gap: 513,120 divided by 35,980 equals 14.261, so Thailand's land area is about 14.3 times Taiwan's.
- Density per resident: 1,989,709 divided by 70,300 thousands equals 28.30 companies per 1,000 residents for Thailand. 812,230 divided by 23,299.132 thousands equals 34.86, rounded to 34.9, for Taiwan.
- Density multiple per resident: 34.86 divided by 28.30 equals 1.232, confirming Taiwan's per resident density is about 23 percent higher than Thailand's.
- Density per land area: 1,989,709 divided by 513,120 sq km equals 3,877.7 companies per 1,000 sq km for Thailand. 812,230 divided by 35,980 sq km equals 22,574.5 for Taiwan.
- Density multiple per land area: 22,574.5 divided by 3,877.7 equals 5.822, confirming Taiwan's per square kilometer density is about 5.8 times Thailand's.

Frequently asked questions
Does Thailand have more registered companies than Taiwan?
Yes in raw terms. Thailand's register held 1,989,709 companies as of 17 July 2026. Taiwan's register held 812,230 at the end of June 2026. Thailand's total runs about 2.4 times Taiwan's.
Which registry is bigger relative to its population?
Taiwan's is. Taiwan carries 34.9 registered companies per 1,000 residents. Thailand carries 28.3, even though Thailand's raw total is much larger.
Why does Taiwan have more companies per resident than Thailand?
Taiwan is a small, dense, trade oriented economy where incorporation is more common relative to population than in Thailand's larger and more agrarian economy. Its population also skews toward business formation activity even as the population itself shrinks slightly year over year.
How much does land area change the comparison?
It widens the gap sharply. Taiwan packs about 22,574 registered companies into every 1,000 square kilometers. Thailand packs just 3,878, a difference of nearly six to one. Thailand's land area runs 14.3 times larger than Taiwan's, which explains much of the gap.
