Is Thailand's arts and entertainment sector actually profitable

The Department of Business Development classifies 18,486 companies under section R, arts, entertainment and recreation, as of 2 July 2026. Filers in this section report 133.6 billion baht in combined revenue, a real slice of the registry even if it is a small one nationally, about 0.17 percent of Thailand's total reported revenue of 76.62 trillion baht. The number that stands out is the bottom line. Aggregate net profit for the section is negative 325.9 million baht, which works out to a net margin of negative 0.24 percent. That is the single lowest net margin of any of the 21 lettered industry sections in the registry (DBD, 2026). Only other service activities, section S, also runs negative, at negative 0.07 percent. Every other section, from wholesale trade to finance, turns a positive aggregate profit.

Why a loss making sector still matters

The arts and entertainment label covers activities the registry does not break out by name at the five digit level, everything from lottery and gambling distribution to sports facilities, museums, gyms and cultural venues sits under one section code. What the numbers do show is a sector carried by one very large filer sitting on top of a long tail of very small ones. LOTTERYPLUS CO., LTD. alone reports 16.19 billion baht in revenue, 12.1 percent of the section's entire 133.6 billion baht total. Strip that single company out and the rest of an already thin sector looks even thinner. Just 49.07 percent of the section's classified companies are active, a shade under the national active share of 50.0 percent, so roughly half of the entities registered in this space are not currently trading. Micro companies make up 81.53 percent of the sector, well above the national micro share of 75.3 percent, so this is also one of the most fragmented sections in the whole registry. For a government courting the creative economy as a growth engine (Korea Herald, 2026), the DBD data is a plain reminder that company count and revenue scale do not add up to profit, and that survival here is closer to a coin flip than in most of the economy.

Definitions

Net margin
Aggregate net profit for a section divided by aggregate revenue for that section. A negative margin means the section as a whole reported a net loss.
Aggregate ratio
A ratio computed by summing every company's raw figures first, then dividing, rather than averaging each company's individual ratio. One very large company can move the whole figure.
Return on equity
Aggregate net profit for a section divided by aggregate shareholder equity for that section.
Return on assets
Aggregate net profit for a section divided by aggregate total assets for that section.
Survival rate
The share of classified companies in a section that are currently marked active rather than inactive or dormant in the registry.
Active company
A registered company that the DBD registry currently marks as operating, as opposed to dormant or struck off.
Size band
A company classification of micro, small, medium or large used by the DBD registry, generally based on revenue and employee thresholds.
Section
The top level, single letter grouping of the TSIC industry classification, such as R for arts, entertainment and recreation.

Assumptions

Methodology

Figures are aggregated from the DBD registry's per section financial statement data as of 2 July 2026. Section R covers arts, entertainment and recreation under the TSIC classification used by the Department of Business Development. Net margin, return on equity and return on assets are aggregate ratios, total sector net profit or equity contribution or asset base divided by total sector revenue, equity or assets, not an average of each company's own ratio. Company size bands and the active versus inactive count are aggregated from five digit TSIC level records joined to section R by section code. Five digit industry names are not available in the source tables, so this page reports section level facts only and does not name sub industries.
