Thai Companies per 1,000 Residents: Active vs Registered 2026
In short
Thailand has 13.86 active companies per 1,000 residents, as of 17 July 2026. The registered count gives 27.76 per 1,000, about double the active figure. Of 1,989,709 registered companies, 993,373 are active. That is one live company for every 72 residents, not one for every 36. The headline density is roughly double the working business base.
How many Thai companies are there per 1,000 residents?
It depends on which count you trust. Divide all 1,989,709 registered companies by a population of 71.67 million (World Bank, 2024) and you get 27.76 companies per 1,000 residents. Divide only the 993,373 active companies and you get 13.86. The second number is the honest one. A registered company that no longer trades employs nobody, pays nothing and serves no customer. Counting it as part of the business base inflates density by a factor of two.

- Dormant14
Figures in companies per 1,000 residents.
Registered splits almost evenly into active and dormant, so the active figure is about half the headline.
Registered versus active, per capita
| Measure | Companies | Per 1,000 residents | Residents per company |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registered | 1,989,709 | 28 | 36 |
| Active | 993,373 | 14 | 72 |
| Dormant | 993,336 | 14 | 72 |
Company counts from the DBD registry as of 17 Jul 2026, divided by 71,668,011 residents.
Why this matters
Per capita company counts get quoted to signal how entrepreneurial a country is. Quote the registered figure and Thailand looks twice as dense as it is. The gap is the registry's memory, not the economy's pulse. Companies are easy to open and slow to close, so the stock of names keeps growing while the number of working firms does not. Anyone sizing a market, planning a sales territory or comparing Thailand with another country should start from the active count. One live company for every 72 residents is still a lot of firms. It is just half as many as the headline suggests.
Definitions
- Registered company
- Any company on the DBD registry, whether or not it still trades.
- Active company
- A registered company whose registry status is operating.
- Dormant company
- A registered company flagged inactive in the registry.
- Companies per 1,000 residents
- A company count divided by population in thousands, a simple measure of business density.
Assumptions
- Population is a World Bank 2024 midyear estimate, so the per capita rates carry that estimate's uncertainty.
- The registry counts companies, not sole proprietors or informal businesses, so total business density is higher than shown.
- Active status reflects registry flags and may lag real closures.
- The active and dormant counts cover 1,986,709 companies, 3,000 fewer than the registered total.
Methodology
Company counts come from the Department of Business Development registry as of 17 July 2026, using the national aggregate for registered companies and the sum of active and inactive flags across industry codes for the active and dormant split. Active means the registry status is operating. Dormant is the registry's inactive status. Population is the World Bank 2024 midyear estimate of 71,668,011, which is an external estimate and not a registry figure. Per 1,000 figures divide each company count by population in thousands.
How we verified this
- Registered per 1,000: 1,989,709 divided by 71,668.011 thousand residents equals 27.76.
- Active per 1,000: 993,373 divided by 71,668.011 equals 13.86, which is 49.9 percent of the registered rate.
- Dormant per 1,000: 993,336 divided by 71,668.011 equals 13.86.
- Residents per company: 71,668,011 divided by 1,989,709 equals 36.0, and divided by 993,373 equals 72.1.
- Active plus dormant is 1,986,709, which matches the companies carrying a size band and sits 3,000 below the 1,989,709 registered total.
