Thailand vs EU: Share of Large Enterprises (2026)
In short
Large firms make up 0.70 percent of Thai registered companies as of 17 July 2026. Eurostat puts the EU figure at 0.2 percent. That makes Thailand's large share about 3.5 times the European one. The gap is real but partly definitional, because the two sources measure size differently. Thailand's medium share is 1.96 percent against 0.8 percent in the EU.
Are Thai companies more likely to be large than European ones?
On paper, yes. Large firms are 0.70 percent of Thai companies with a size band (DBD, 2026), which is 13,875 of 1,986,709. Eurostat reports that large enterprises are only 0.2 percent of the EU business economy, about 53,000 firms (Eurostat, 2024). Divide one by the other and Thailand comes out at roughly 3.5 times the European share. The medium class tells the same story, at 1.96 percent in Thailand against 0.8 percent in the EU. Thailand is not a country of giants. It is a country where the registry's top size band is simply wider than Europe's.

Why the gap needs a careful read
The two numbers do not use the same ruler. Eurostat defines large as more than 249 persons employed, and it counts only the business economy. The Thai registry assigns its size band from filed figures, so a firm can be large by money while employing far fewer people. The Thai count also covers all registered juristic persons with a band, including dormant ones. Eurostat counts active enterprises. A fair reading is that Thailand's share is higher by a wide margin, but the true headcount gap is probably smaller than 3.5 times. This page does not give a country-by-country EU ranking, because the Eurostat release used here reports only the EU total.

Why this matters
Policy talk in Thailand often borrows European benchmarks for small business support. Those benchmarks assume a tiny top tier. Thailand's top tier is thicker, led by electricity and gas at 2.44 percent and manufacturing at 2.05 percent. Wholesale and retail holds 5,590 of the 13,875 large firms, the most of any section, yet only 0.78 percent of its own companies. Any plan that treats the Thai size ladder as a copy of the European one will misjudge where the big employers and buyers actually sit. Compare like with like first, then borrow the policy.
Definitions
- Large company, Thailand
- A company the DBD registry places in its top size band, based on filed financial figures.
- Large enterprise, EU
- An enterprise with more than 249 persons employed, per Eurostat.
- Business economy
- Eurostat's grouping of industry, construction and market services, excluding public administration.
- Size band
- The micro, small, medium or large class assigned to a company.
- Dormant
- A registered company with no recent filed activity.
Assumptions
- Thai size bands and Eurostat employment classes are different definitions, so the 3.5 times ratio is indicative.
- Thai counts include dormant registered companies, while Eurostat counts active enterprises.
- The EU figure is preliminary 2023 data and covers the EU aggregate, not individual member states.
- Thai section shares use companies with a size band, so they differ slightly from section totals elsewhere.
Methodology
Thai figures come from the Department of Business Development registry aggregates, as of 17 July 2026, using each company's registry size band of micro, small, medium or large. Only the 1,986,709 companies that carry a size band are counted. Section shares sum the 5-digit industry counts within each lettered section. The EU figures are Eurostat's preliminary 2023 structural business statistics for the business economy, where large means more than 249 persons employed. The two size definitions differ, so the ratio is indicative and not exact.
How we verified this
- Thai size bands sum to the total: 1,492,884 + 441,008 + 38,942 + 13,875 = 1,986,709.
- Large share recomputed: 13,875 / 1,986,709 = 0.698 percent, shown as 0.70.
- Medium share recomputed: 38,942 / 1,986,709 = 1.96 percent.
- Micro share recomputed: 1,492,884 / 1,986,709 = 75.14 percent. Small: 441,008 / 1,986,709 = 22.20 percent.
- Micro plus small: 1,933,892 / 1,986,709 = 97.34 percent.
- Ratio recomputed: 0.70 / 0.2 = 3.5.
- The 15 sections shown total 13,810 large companies, and arts (31), education (18) and other services (16) add 65 more, matching the 13,875 size-class total.
- EU figures checked against the Eurostat release: large 0.2 percent, medium 0.8 percent, micro and small 99 percent.
- Source data refreshed on 17 July 2026, slightly newer than the 7 July anchors: large 13,875 now against 13,876 earlier, and the 0.7 percent share is unchanged.
