Thailand vs Malaysia: New Company Registration Pace 2026
In short
Thailand registered 128,617 new companies in 2025, as of 17 July 2026. Malaysia's Companies Commission, known as SSM, recorded 60,712 new company registrations over the same calendar year. Thailand's raw total runs 2.12 times Malaysia's. Adjust both counts for population and the gap all but disappears. Thailand forms about 4.92 new companies a day for every million residents. Malaysia forms about 4.86. The two rates differ by roughly one percent. Two economies of similar scale, once the population math is done, register businesses at almost exactly the same pace.
How does Thailand's pace of new company registration compare with Malaysia's?
Thailand's Department of Business Development recorded 128,617 new company registrations across 2025, drawn from founding year records in the DBD registry as of 17 July 2026 (DBD, 2026). Malaysia's company registrar, the Companies Commission of Malaysia, known locally as SSM, logged 60,712 new company registrations over the same twelve months, built from its own published monthly totals for 2025 (SSM, 2025). Divide one figure by the other and Thailand's crop of new companies runs 2.12 times Malaysia's. That alone would suggest Thailand is the far more active registry of the two. The picture looks different once population enters the calculation.

Why the population adjusted picture tells a different story
Thailand's population runs to about 71.67 million people. Malaysia's population runs to roughly 34.2 million, less than half of Thailand's. Once the daily pace of new registrations is divided by population, the raw gap between the two countries collapses. Thailand forms about 4.92 new companies a day for every million residents it holds. Malaysia forms about 4.86. The ratio between the two rates is 1.01. That is a difference of roughly one percent. Thailand's registry looks more than twice as busy on the surface, but a Malaysian resident is about as likely as a Thai resident to see a new company register in their name each day. The size of Thailand's economy, not any underlying difference in business dynamism, explains almost the entire gap in the headline counts.

Why this comparison matters
Most of the cross-border comparisons on this site put Thailand well behind a smaller, richer neighbor. Thailand's population-adjusted formation rate trails Singapore's by a factor of roughly seven and trails Australia's by a similar margin. Malaysia breaks that pattern. It sits closer to Thailand in population, in income level and now, it turns out, in the pace at which residents start new companies. A gap of about one percent in the population-adjusted rate is well within the range that a single active month could close in either direction. For a founder or an investor weighing Southeast Asian markets by registration momentum rather than by market size, Thailand and Malaysia currently look less like a fast economy and a slow one and more like two economies running at the same clip.
Definitions
- Daily formation pace
- The total count of new companies registered in a calendar year divided by 365 days, expressing formation volume as an average daily rate.
- Founding year
- The calendar year in which a company was registered with Thailand's Department of Business Development, used to group new registrations by year.
- SSM
- Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia, the Companies Commission of Malaysia, the national body responsible for registering companies and businesses, equivalent in function to Thailand's Department of Business Development.
- Population adjusted formation rate
- The daily formation pace divided by a country's population in millions, allowing formation intensity to be compared across countries of different size.
Assumptions
- Malaysia's 60,712 figure counts local and foreign company registrations only, as published by SSM, and excludes sole proprietorship and partnership business registrations, which SSM reports as a separate category.
- Population figures use each country's latest available official estimate, Thailand for 2024 and Malaysia for 2025, so the per capita comparison mixes two base years by one year.
- 2026 founding year records are excluded from Thailand's count because the year is still in progress and the DBD figure for it will keep rising as filings are processed.
- The comparison covers company registrations only and does not capture closures, so it measures gross formation pace rather than net growth in the number of active companies.
Methodology
Thailand's figures come from the market_new_companies_insight aggregate in the Department of Business Development registry, filtered to founding_year 2025, computed_at 17 July 2026. The daily pace divides the 128,617 annual total by 365 calendar days. Malaysia's 60,712 figure is the sum of the twelve monthly local and foreign company registration counts published by the Companies Commission of Malaysia, SSM, for calendar year 2025, and does not include business or sole proprietorship registrations, which SSM reports separately. Population figures are official national estimates, Thailand for 2024 from the World Bank and Malaysia for 2025 from the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the latest year each source publishes. 2026 founding-year records are excluded throughout because the year is still in progress and undercounts new registrations that have not yet been filed.
How we verified this
- Thailand daily pace recomputed as 128,617 divided by 365 equals 352.4 new companies a day.
- Malaysia daily pace recomputed as 60,712 divided by 365 equals 166.3 new companies a day.
- Annual ratio recomputed as 128,617 divided by 60,712 equals 2.12.
- Malaysia's 60,712 annual total independently recomputed by summing SSM's twelve published monthly local plus foreign registration counts for 2025, which matched the published annual figure exactly.
- Population adjusted pace recomputed as 352.4 divided by 71.67 equals 4.92 for Thailand and 166.3 divided by 34.2 equals 4.86 for Malaysia, giving a ratio of 1.01.
