Updated 20 July 2026Data as of 17 July 2026Verified

In short

New company formation in Thailand rose every single year from 2008 through 2021, a 14 year unbroken climb. It peaked in 2021 at 151,205 new firms. That is up from just 30,227 in 2007. The streak then snapped: registrations fell 20.69 percent in 2022 and kept falling in 2023, the first back to back decline of the period. Formation has since recovered for two straight years but as of 2025 still sits 14.94 percent below the 2021 peak.

How long did Thailand's company formation streak run?

Fourteen years in a row, from 2008 through 2021, without a single down year (DBD, 2026). New company formation started the run at 30,227 in 2007. It closed the run at 151,205 in 2021, a peak more than five times the starting count. Every single year in between posted a higher count than the one before it, through the 2008 global financial crisis, the 2011 floods, and the early years of the pandemic. The climb finally broke in 2022, when new registrations fell to 119,923. That was a drop of 20.69 percent from the peak. 2023 extended the slide to 112,461, the first time in the entire 2007 to 2025 record that formation fell for two years running.

Why the streak, and the break, both matter

A 14 year run of rising formation is not a random walk. It tracks a period when incorporating a company in Thailand got steadily easier, e commerce and gig platforms lowered the cost of starting a small trading or service firm, and low interest rates made capital cheap to raise. Bank of Thailand data shows SME bank lending has since contracted for 14 straight quarters amid higher credit risk costs and weaker demand (OpenGov Asia, 2026), a plausible piece of the same story that shows up in the 2022 and 2023 registration drop. The 2024 and 2025 rebound proves the slowdown was not permanent, but two years of growth have not been enough to erase two years of decline. For anyone reading company count as a proxy for entrepreneurial confidence, the honest read is that Thailand's post pandemic new business boom peaked in 2021 and has not yet come back.

Definitions

Founding year
The calendar year in which a company was first registered with the Thai company registry, as recorded in its incorporation record.
Growth streak
A run of consecutive years in which each year's new company count is higher than the count of the year immediately before it.
Year over year change
The percentage difference between one year's new company count and the prior year's count, calculated as the difference divided by the prior year's count.
Incomplete year
A calendar year that has not yet ended as of the data pull date, so its registration count is necessarily lower than a full year and is excluded from year over year comparisons.

Assumptions

Methodology

New company counts are drawn from market_new_companies_insight in the DBD backed registry, which tabulates registered juristic persons by founding_year, as of 17 Jul 2026. A company is counted in the year it was founded, not the year any later filing was made. Growth streak years are counted as years where the founding year count exceeded the prior year's count. 2026 is excluded from every calculation because the year is still in progress and its count is necessarily partial. Percentage changes are recomputed directly from the founding year counts, not pulled from any pre built ratio.

Frequently asked questions

How many years in a row did Thai company formation rise before it stalled?

Fourteen years in a row, from 2008 through 2021, before new registrations fell for the first time in 2022.

What was the peak year for new company formation in Thailand?

2021, with 151,205 new companies founded, the highest of any year from 2007 to 2025.

Has new company formation recovered since the 2022 and 2023 decline?

Yes, it rose again in both 2024 and 2025, but the 2025 count of 128,617 is still 14.94 percent below the 2021 peak.

Why was 2026 excluded from the analysis?

2026 is still in progress as of this data pull, so its founding year count is partial and not comparable to a completed year.
