Thailand's Company Register Nears 2 Million Firms in 2026
In short
Thailand's company register held 1,989,709 companies as of 17 July 2026, just 10,291 short of 2 million. The register has already closed 99.49 percent of the distance to that milestone. Formation ran at 128,617 new companies in 2025, about 352 a day. Hold that pace and the remaining gap closes in roughly 29 days. The five year average from 2021 through 2025 backs this up, adding 126,773 companies a year on its own.
How close is Thailand to 2 million registered companies?
Thailand's company register held 1,989,709 companies as of 17 July 2026, according to the Department of Business Development (DBD, 2026). That is 10,291 companies short of 2 million, or 99.49 percent of the way there. Formation ran hot in 2025, adding 128,617 new companies, a pace of about 352 a day. Carry that pace forward and the remaining gap closes in roughly 29 days. Check it against a steadier benchmark and the answer barely moves. The five year average from 2021 through 2025 comes to 126,773 new companies a year, and at that pace the gap closes in about 30 days. Companies founded since 2007 alone add up to 1,672,732, more than four fifths of everything on the register today. The other 316,977 companies still on file predate 2007 and have simply never closed.
New company registrations by founding year, 2016 to 2026
Figures in new companies registered.
2026 covers only 1 January through 17 July and will keep rising as later filings are recorded, so treat it as a partial count, not a final year.
The milestone math
| Metric | Value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Registered companies now | 1,989,709 | 99.49 percent of the way to 2 million |
| Companies still needed | 10,291 | 0.51 percent of the milestone left to fill |
| New companies added in 2025 | 128,617 | the strongest full year since 2021 |
| Average pace in 2025 | 352 a day | one new company roughly every four minutes |
| Days to close the gap at the 2025 pace | 29 days | about one month |
| Five year average formations, 2021 to 2025 | 126,773 a year | confirms 2025 was not a one year fluke |
| Days to close the gap at the five year average pace | 30 days | nearly identical to the 2025 based estimate |
| New companies so far in 2026, through 17 Jul | 110,866 | already tops the full year totals for 2016, 2017, and 2018, and equals 86 percent of all of 2025, with over five months of 2026 still to be recorded |
How the 10,291 company gap to 2 million closes at recent formation paces, as of 17 Jul 2026.
Why the two million mark matters, and why it does not
A round number changes nothing by itself. Crossing 2 million will not make a single dormant company active or push a single baht of new revenue through the economy. What it does mark is scale. Among the 1,986,709 companies that carry a status classification, 993,373 are currently active and 993,336 are dormant but not deregistered, a near even split (DBD, 2026). The remaining 3,000 companies on the register carry no status classification at all. The 2 million count folds in every one of these groups, so it measures the size of Thailand's formal corporate registry, not the size of its live economy. Read that way, the milestone still says something real. A register that can add 128,617 companies in a single year, and is already on track to do it again in 2026, reflects a formation engine that survived a pandemic dip in 2022 and 2023 and came back stronger by 2024 and 2025. International researchers track exactly this kind of momentum through the World Bank's new business density indicator, registrations per 1,000 working age residents, precisely because a rising headcount only means something once it is weighed against population and survival (World Bank, 2026). For Thailand, the raw count is about to tick past a number nobody has crossed before, and that is worth marking even if the mechanics behind it do not change on the day it happens.
Definitions
- Registered company
- A juristic entity recorded in the DBD company registry, counted whether or not it currently trades.
- Founding year
- The calendar year a company was originally registered with DBD. Companies are grouped here by founding year only if they still remain on the register today.
- Active company
- A company that DBD's most recent status data flags as currently operating.
- Dormant company
- A company still on the register but not currently flagged as operating. It has not been deregistered, it is simply inactive.
- Run rate projection
- An estimate that takes a recent pace of company formation and assumes it continues unchanged, used here to estimate how many days it would take to close the gap to 2 million.
Assumptions
- The days to close the gap assumes recent formation paces continue unchanged. Any policy change, economic shock, or shift in registration behavior could speed this up or slow it down.
- Founding year counts include only companies still on the register today. A cohort from an older year that has since lost companies to dissolution will always look smaller than it did at the time, so old and recent years are not perfectly comparable.
- The 2026 founding year figure covers only 1 January through 17 July 2026 and will rise as more of the year's filings are recorded, so it should not be read as a finished annual total.
- Two million is a symbolic threshold chosen for its round number, not a regulatory or economic trigger point.
Methodology
Figures come from the DBD company registry as aggregated in the market_national_insight and market_new_companies_insight tables, computed 17 July 2026. Registered companies counts every juristic entity still on file, active or dormant, not only those currently trading. New companies by founding year counts entities that were originally registered in that calendar year and remain on the register today, so it excludes any company from that vintage that has since been dissolved. The 2026 total is partial, covering only 1 January through 17 July 2026. Pace to close the milestone gap is a straight line projection from a stated historical rate and is not a forecast of DBD policy or filing behavior.
How we verified this
- Gap to the milestone recomputed as 2,000,000 minus 1,989,709 equals 10,291.
- Share of the milestone reached recomputed as 1,989,709 divided by 2,000,000 equals 99.49 percent, leaving 0.51 percent still to close.
- 2025 daily pace recomputed as 128,617 divided by 365 equals 352.4 a day, and 10,291 divided by 352.4 equals 29.2 days, rounded to 29 days.
- Five year average recomputed as the sum of 2021 through 2025 new company counts, 151,205 plus 119,923 plus 112,461 plus 121,657 plus 128,617, equals 633,863, divided by 5 equals 126,773 a year, and 10,291 divided by that daily rate of 347.3 equals 29.6 days, rounded to 30 days.
- Pre 2007 legacy stock recomputed as 1,989,709 minus the sum of every founding year from 2007 through 2026, 1,672,732, equals 316,977, or 15.9 percent of the register.
- Active share recomputed as 993,373 divided by the 1,986,709 companies with a status classification equals 50.0 percent, with 993,336 dormant and 3,000 companies on the register carrying no status classification.
- 2026 year to date share of full year 2025 recomputed as 110,866 divided by 128,617 equals 86.2 percent, rounded to 86 percent.
