Why does the annual sum miss more than 400,000 companies?
Add up every row of Thailand's founding year table from 2007 to 2025 and the total comes to 1,561,866 companies (DBD, 2026). The full register, the count of every company on file with the Department of Business Development, stands at 1,989,709 as of 7 July 2026. The two totals should reconcile and they do not. The difference is 427,843 companies. That gap equals 21.5 percent of the register, roughly one company in five. Those firms exist in the national count but never show up as a birth year anywhere in the annual series. This is not a story about companies disappearing. It is a story about a table that only starts counting in 2007, while the register itself carries firms that trace back decades earlier.

Why this matters
Thailand's company registry did not start in 2007. The agency now called the Department of Business Development traces back to the Department of Commercial Registration, created in 1924 under the Ministry of Commerce, and firms have organized under the Civil and Commercial Code and the Public Limited Companies Act of 1992 for far longer than the founding year table covers. So the 427,843 undated companies are not a mystery cohort of centuries old survivors. They are almost certainly older firms whose founding year simply was not carried into the digitized aggregate that feeds this table, a table that happens to start at exactly the same year, 2007, as the completely separate statement year series. Two independent tables sharing one cutoff year is a strong signal of a system migration point rather than a coincidence of business history. For anyone using this data to model formation trends, the lesson is concrete. A yearly sum from this table understates the true size of the register by about a fifth, and any growth rate calculated only from 2007 forward silently assumes that Thailand's corporate sector effectively began that year. It did not. Readers building on registry data should treat the founding year series as a partial, left truncated slice of a longer history, and should always reconcile a summed series against the national total before publishing a growth claim.

- The explanation that the gap traces to a 2007 digitization boundary is the best supported reading of the evidence available in the aggregate tables, not a confirmed fact drawn from company level records, since person and record level detail is outside the read only access this page draws on.
- The full register total includes both active and dormant companies still on file, so the gap is not explained by excluding inactive firms.
Methodology
New company counts by founding year are drawn from the DBD registry's founding year aggregate as of 7 July 2026, summed across every year from 2007 through 2025. The 2026 row was excluded because that year is still accumulating registrations at the time of this snapshot, the same treatment the data guide applies to an in progress statement year. The full register figure is the total entity count in the national aggregate table for the same snapshot. The gap is the register total minus the summed founding year total. This page does not claim to know the exact founding year of the 427,843 undated companies, only that the register carries them while the yearly series does not.
How we verified this
- Manually summed the 19 founding year rows from 2007 through 2025, 30227 plus 33093 plus 35371 plus 41404 plus 45389 plus 49466 plus 60270 plus 63417 plus 68500 plus 73163 plus 89719 plus 104273 plus 111284 plus 122427 plus 151205 plus 119923 plus 112461 plus 121657 plus 128617, and the running total matched the database aggregate of 1561866.
- Subtracted the summed founding year total from the full register, 1989709 minus 1561866 equals 427843, confirming the gap figure used throughout the page.
- Divided 427843 by 1989709 to get 21.5 percent for the gap share, and divided 1561866 by 1989709 to get 78.5 percent for the dated share, and confirmed the two shares sum to 100.0 percent.
