Which 5-digit industry code holds the most total assets?
Rank Thailand's roughly 1,000 five digit TSIC codes by total reported assets for statement year 2568, the filing year ending in 2025, and one code separates itself from the entire field. TSIC 64191, the code covering commercial banking, reported 22.75 trillion baht in total assets (DBD, 2026). That is 21.93 percent of the 103.75 trillion baht held across all 998 codes with asset data. Just 19 companies file under that code, led by Bangkok Bank Public Company Limited. The second ranked code, TSIC 64202, holding companies, carries 8.47 trillion baht from 5,104 filers. The leader's balance sheet runs 2.68 times larger. Why asset concentration runs sharper than revenue concentration
Assets cluster far tighter than revenue does inside Thailand's registry. In the same statement year, the single busiest revenue code, a gold and bullion trading code inside wholesale and retail trade, holds 13.04 percent of national revenue. The single busiest asset code holds 21.93 percent of national assets. That concentration runs 1.68 times sharper. The gap makes sense once the business model is considered. A bank books deposits and loans on its balance sheet at full value, while a trading company only books the margin it earns on goods passing through its hands. Independent market data on Thailand's banking system puts its total assets in a comparable multi trillion baht range (Statista, 2025). That accounting difference means total assets say far more about the size of a balance sheet than about the size of a year's business. Return on assets makes the same point from another angle. TSIC 64191 earns just 1.08 percent return on assets, below the 2.55 percent national average. It sits on more assets than any other code in the country despite that low return. Holding companies under TSIC 64202 turn a sharper 3.10 percent, and life insurers under TSIC 65110 sit lower again at 1.87 percent. Anyone using total assets as a proxy for market power in Thailand needs a second number next to it. The industry that owns the most, and the industry that earns the most from what it owns, are rarely the same industry.
Definitions
- TSIC code
- The Thailand Standard Industrial Classification code assigned to a registered company. Codes run to five digits, and every code rolls up into one of 21 lettered industry sections.
- Total assets
- The sum of everything a company reports owning on its balance sheet, cash, receivables, property, equipment and financial holdings, before subtracting liabilities.
- Statement year 2568
- The Buddhist calendar year used in the DBD registry, equal to 2025 in the Gregorian calendar.
- Filing company
- A registered company that submitted a balance sheet and income statement to the DBD for the statement year measured, as distinct from every company ever registered under a code.
- Return on assets
- Net profit divided by total assets, a measure of how much income a company or industry generates from the assets it holds.
Assumptions
- Only the 998 five digit TSIC codes with reported total assets for statement year 2568 are included in the national base used for share calculations.
- Total assets reflect book value as reported on each company's filed balance sheet, not current market value.
- The registry does not publish a plain language description for five digit codes, so the top 5 codes are identified by number, section, and top filer, cross checked against the published TSIC 2009 structure.
- Statement year 2568, corresponding to 2025, is treated as the latest complete filing year, since more recent years remain under filed.
Methodology
Total assets, revenue, net profit, and company counts are aggregated by 5 digit TSIC industry code for statement year 2568, the Buddhist calendar year equal to 2025, the latest filing year with a complete set of financial statements, drawn from the DBD registry's per code, per year aggregate table as of 14 August 2026. A company counts toward a code's totals only if it filed a financial statement for that statement year, so figures here can differ from a code's all time registered company count. National totals sum every 5 digit code with reported asset data for that year, 998 codes covering 714,157 filing companies. The registry does not publish a plain language description field for 5 digit codes, so the activity names used for the top 5 codes were identified from each code's largest filing company and cross checked against Thailand's published TSIC 2009 classification structure, the same method used across this site's other 5 digit code rankings.
How we verified this
- Summed the top 5 codes' total assets, 22,751,878,020,378 plus 8,473,973,076,509.27 plus 3,161,242,458,664.98 plus 3,057,901,535,285.55 plus 2,433,255,485,723.03, equal to 39,878,250,576,560.83 baht, then divided by the national total of 103,746,513,374,770.89 baht across 998 codes to get 38.44 percent.
- Recomputed the top code's own share as 22,751,878,020,378 divided by 103,746,513,374,770.89, equal to 21.93 percent, and confirmed by sorting all 998 codes by total_assets that TSIC 64191 is the maximum.
- Divided the top code's assets by the second code's assets, 22,751,878,020,378 over 8,473,973,076,509.27, equal to 2.68, confirming the leader holds more than double the runner up.
- Summed codes two through five, 8,473,973,076,509.27 plus 3,161,242,458,664.98 plus 3,057,901,535,285.55 plus 2,433,255,485,723.03, equal to 17,126,372,556,182.83 baht, confirming it is less than the top code's 22,751,878,020,378 baht alone.
- Queried statement year 2568 revenue separately: the top revenue code, TSIC 47732, holds 8,848,365,418,737.62 baht of the 67,867,699,924,183.86 baht national revenue total for that year, 13.04 percent, versus the top asset code's 21.93 percent share of assets, confirming assets are 1.68 times more concentrated at the top than revenue.
- Summed the top 5 codes' filing company counts, 19 plus 5,104 plus 93 plus 14,432 plus 92, equal to 19,740, then divided by the 714,157 companies that filed for statement year 2568 to get 2.76 percent.
