Wholesale and Retail vs Financial Sector Growth in Thailand 2026
In short
Wholesale and retail trade's revenue growth accelerated to 18.2 percent in the latest year. That tops its own 13.7 percent five-year pace. Financial and insurance activities moved the opposite way, with five-year average growth of just 0.9 percent a year. Revenue there then fell 20.8 percent in the latest year alone. Thailand's largest sector by company count is speeding up while its most profitable sector is shrinking, and the two lines just crossed.
How differently are the two sectors growing right now?
Wholesale and retail trade is the largest sector in Thailand by company count, and its revenue growth just sped up (DBD, 2026). Revenue rose 18.2 percent in the latest statement year. That beats the sector's own 13.7 percent average pace over the prior five years. Financial and insurance activities are moving the opposite way. Revenue there grew at a slow 0.9 percent a year on average across five years. It then fell 20.8 percent in the latest year alone. One sector is now accelerating past its own recent history. The other just gave back years of gains in a single year.

Why this divergence matters
The two sectors show opposite pictures of the same economy. Wholesale and retail keeps only 1.28 percent of every baht of revenue as profit, yet its volume is climbing fast enough to look like a growth sector from the outside. Financial and insurance keeps 28.25 percent of every baht, the richest margin of any major sector, even after revenue fell. Company counts tell a similar story in reverse. The number of wholesale and retail companies with a filed statement dropped 2.44 percent in the latest year even as sector revenue surged. The number of financial and insurance filers rose 1.97 percent even as sector revenue shrank. Fewer traders are moving more goods. More financial firms are splitting a smaller pool of revenue. External data point the same way. Bank of Thailand figures show commercial bank lending contracted 1.1 percent year on year in the fourth quarter of 2025, with sector profitability falling on lower net interest income after policy rate cuts (Bank of Thailand, 2026). Reading Thailand's growth story from one sector's revenue line alone would miss exactly this kind of split.
Definitions
- CAGR
- Compound annual growth rate. The steady annual rate that would take a starting value to an ending value over a given number of years, if growth were smooth every year.
- Net margin
- Net profit as a share of revenue for all companies in a section. A margin of ten percent means ten satang of profit for every baht of revenue.
- Statement year
- The fiscal year covered by a company's filed financial statement. Registry years are recorded in the Buddhist calendar and converted to the Gregorian calendar here.
- Survival rate
- The share of all companies ever registered in a section that are still classified as active, calculated as active companies divided by total registered companies.
- Filing companies
- The count of companies that submitted a financial statement for a given statement year, which can differ slightly from the total number of companies ever registered in a section.
Assumptions
- Revenue figures are nominal baht and are not adjusted for inflation.
- The latest statement year may still receive late filings after this snapshot, which could revise the one-year growth rate slightly.
- Financial and insurance companies recognise interest and premium income differently from a trading company, so its margin is not directly comparable with wholesale and retail.
- Growth rates are section-wide aggregates and can be driven by a small number of very large companies rather than the typical firm in the section.
- Company counts reflect filed statements in the source table used for the growth calculation and can differ slightly from counts drawn from a different snapshot of the registry.
Methodology
Revenue growth rates are one-year and five-year compound annual growth rates of aggregate reported revenue for all companies classified under each industry section in the Department of Business Development registry, computed from year-by-year revenue aggregates as of 17 July 2026. The one-year rate compares the two most recent statement years. The five-year rate compounds the change from five statement years earlier to the latest statement year. Net margin is aggregate net profit divided by aggregate revenue for the same section. Filing company counts are companies with a filed financial statement in the stated year, drawn from the same source table as the growth rates. Figures are section-wide aggregates, not the average of individual company results, and are not adjusted for inflation. The latest statement year can still gain a small number of late filings after this snapshot was taken.
How we verified this
- Wholesale and retail's one-year revenue growth was recomputed directly: 33,500,071,738,864 baht in the latest year divided by 28,342,301,233,625 baht the year before equals 1.1820, an 18.20 percent increase, matching the reported 18.2 percent rate.
- Wholesale and retail's five-year compound growth was recomputed as the fifth root of the latest year's revenue divided by revenue five years earlier: 33,500,071,738,864 divided by 17,614,411,688,648 equals 1.9019, and the fifth root of that ratio is 1.1372, a 13.72 percent average annual rate.
- Financial and insurance's one-year change was recomputed directly: 2,700,392,016,056 baht in the latest year divided by 3,409,782,721,365 baht the year before equals 0.7920, a 20.80 percent decline.
- Financial and insurance's five-year compound growth was recomputed as the fifth root of the latest year's revenue divided by revenue five years earlier: 2,700,392,016,056 divided by 2,582,265,576,902 equals 1.0457, and the fifth root of that ratio is 1.0090, a 0.90 percent average annual rate.
- Filing company count changes were recomputed directly: wholesale and retail filers fell from 241,377 to 235,485, a decline of 2.44 percent, while financial and insurance filers rose from 16,017 to 16,332, an increase of 1.97 percent.
- Survival rates were recomputed as active companies divided by total registered companies in each section: 326,070 divided by 716,066 equals 45.54 percent for wholesale and retail, and 20,710 divided by 35,577 equals 58.21 percent for financial and insurance, matching the reported survival rates.

Frequently asked questions
Which sector is growing faster right now, wholesale and retail or financial and insurance?
Wholesale and retail, by a wide margin. Its revenue grew 18.2 percent in the latest year. Financial and insurance revenue fell 20.8 percent over the same period.
Was financial and insurance always shrinking?
No. Over the prior five years its revenue grew at a modest 0.9 percent average annual rate. The 20.8 percent drop is a one-year reversal, not a five-year trend.
If wholesale and retail is growing so fast, why is its margin so thin?
The sector keeps only 1.28 percent of each baht of revenue as profit. That is well below the 28.25 percent margin in financial and insurance. Growth in trading volume does not translate into a wider margin.
Are fewer companies operating in wholesale and retail despite the revenue growth?
Yes. The number of wholesale and retail companies with a filed statement fell 2.44 percent in the latest year even as sector revenue climbed. Financial and insurance filers grew 1.97 percent even as revenue fell.
