Wholesale and Retail: Thailand's Biggest Sector 2026
In short
Wholesale and retail is Thailand's largest sector, with 715,976 registered companies as of 2 July 2026. That is 36.0 percent of all classified firms, so one in three companies is a trader. The sector reports 34.93 trillion baht of revenue, 45.6 percent of the national total. Yet its net profit margin is just 1.40 percent, the thinnest of any major sector. Scale here does not buy profit.
How big is wholesale and retail in Thailand?
Wholesale and retail trade, section G of the registry, is Thailand's largest sector by a wide margin. It counts 715,976 registered companies as of 2 July 2026 (DBD, 2026). That is 36.0 percent of the 1,986,489 firms with a classified activity, so one in every three Thai companies is a trader. The sector also moves the most money. Reported revenue reaches 34.93 trillion baht, which is 45.6 percent of the 76.62 trillion baht booked across the whole economy. No other section comes close on either count.

Why this matters
Size and profit part ways here. For every 100 baht of revenue a trader books, it keeps about 1.40 baht as net profit, barely one baht in seventy. Manufacturing, the second largest sector, holds 4.38 percent. Financial and insurance firms keep 26.90 percent, roughly nineteen times the trading margin. Thin markup is the nature of moving goods at volume, so the sector runs on turnover rather than on margin. Return on equity tells the same story at 3.21 percent. Survival is close to a coin toss, with 45.5 percent of these companies still active. For a lender or a policy reader the takeaway is plain. The sector that carries the most revenue in Thailand is also the most exposed to a small move in costs, because so little cushion sits between sales and profit. Retail and wholesale trade ranks second only to manufacturing in its share of national output (NESDC, 2025), which makes that thin margin a national question rather than a niche one.
Definitions
- Classified firms
- Registered companies that have a primary industry activity recorded in the registry, which lets them be sorted into a sector.
- Net profit margin
- Net profit as a share of revenue. A 1.40 percent margin means 1.40 baht of profit for every 100 baht of revenue.
- Aggregate margin
- Total sector net profit divided by total sector revenue, rather than the average of each company's own margin.
- Survival rate
- The share of registered companies in the sector that are still active rather than dissolved or dormant.
- Return on equity
- Net profit as a share of shareholder equity, a measure of how much profit the sector earns on the capital invested in it.
Assumptions
- Only companies that filed a financial statement contribute to the revenue, margin, and return figures.
- Sector totals depend on the primary activity code recorded in the registry, so a firm that trades as a side activity may sit in another section.
- Aggregate margin can be pulled by a small number of very large traders and is not the experience of a typical firm.
Methodology
Figures are aggregated from financial statements filed by juristic persons in the Department of Business Development registry, section G of the TSIC activity codes, as of 2 July 2026. Company count covers firms with a classified primary activity. Revenue and net profit are section-wide sums across companies that filed a statement, so margin is aggregate net profit divided by aggregate revenue rather than an average of individual firm margins. Survival rate is the share of registered companies still active. Ratios in the text recompute directly from these raw registry totals.
How we verified this
- Count share recomputed from raw registry totals: 715,976 divided by 1,986,489 equals 0.3604, which rounds to 36.0 percent.
- Revenue share recomputed from raw totals: 34,929,351,730,992 divided by 76,623,676,606,250 equals 0.4559, which rounds to 45.6 percent.
- The 1.40 percent net margin was confirmed as the lowest among the large sectors, below manufacturing at 4.38 percent and financial and insurance at 26.90 percent.
- The finance to trade margin ratio recomputes as 26.90 divided by 1.40 equals 19.2, supporting the stated nineteen times gap.
- The plain-language claims check out: 36.0 percent is about one in three, and 1.40 percent is about one baht in seventy since 100 divided by 1.40 is 71.4.
