How Many Thai Companies Are Actually Active? 993,373 in 2026
In short
Thailand lists 1,989,709 registered companies as of 2 July 2026. Only 993,373 of them are actually active. That is 50.0 percent of every company carrying an activity status. Another 993,336 sit dormant, still on the register but showing no trading signal. Just 1,239,700 companies have ever filed a financial statement. A registration count is not an activity count, and in Thailand the gap is exactly half.
How many are actually active?
Thailand's registry holds 1,989,709 companies as of 2 July 2026 (DBD, 2026). That figure gets quoted as the size of the private economy, and it overstates it badly. Of the companies that carry an activity status, 993,373 are active. Almost the identical number, 993,336, are dormant. The split lands at 50.0 percent active against 50.0 percent dormant, close enough to a coin toss that the two halves differ by just 37 companies. A dormant company is still on the register, still counts toward the headline total, and shows no active trading signal. So the honest answer to how many Thai companies are actually operating is not two million. It is a shade under one million.
Active versus dormant, split down the middle

- Dormant or inactive50.0%993,336
The two slices are near mirror images. Half the register is live, half is dormant.
From registered to active, step by step
| Measure | Companies | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Registered companies | 1,989,709 | 100% of register |
| Carrying an activity status | 1,986,709 | 99.8% of registered |
| Active | 993,373 | 50.0% of classified |
| Dormant or inactive | 993,336 | 50.0% of classified |
| Have filed a financial statement | 1,239,700 | 62.3% of registered |

Why the gap matters
This is not a footnote. Any per company average taken against the full register is diluted by roughly one dormant shell for every live firm. Revenue per company, staff per company, tax paid per company, each roughly doubles once you divide by the active base of 993,373 instead of the registered 1,989,709. The 1,239,700 companies that have filed a financial statement sit between the two counts, which says a filed statement is a sharper sign of life than a registration line alone. The active half also skews small, consistent with the World Bank finding that small and medium firms make up more than 90 percent of Thai businesses (World Bank, 2025). For anyone sizing a market here, the number to reach for is 993,373, not 1,989,709. The register tells you how many companies were ever born. It does not tell you how many are still breathing.
Definitions
- Active company
- A registered company that carries an active operating status on the DBD register, meaning it is recorded as currently in operation.
- Dormant company
- A company still on the register but flagged as not currently operating or showing no active trading signal.
- Activity status
- The operating flag the register assigns to a company, used to sort companies into active or dormant. 3,000 companies had no such flag on the cut date.
- Classified total
- The 1,986,709 companies that carry an activity status, used as the base for the active and dormant shares rather than the full registered count.
- Financial statement filing
- A company having at least one financial statement on record with the DBD, a stronger indicator of real activity than registration alone.
Assumptions
- Activity status on the register is treated as a proxy for real operation, though a company can carry an active flag while trading very little.
- The 3,000 companies with no activity status are excluded from the split rather than assigned to either side.
- A filed financial statement is treated as evidence of activity even if the filing is not for the most recent year.
Methodology
Figures come from the Department of Business Development registry of juristic persons in Thailand as of 2 July 2026. A company is counted active if it carries an active operating status on the register, and dormant if it is registered but flagged as not currently operating or showing no trading signal. Shares of the active versus dormant split are computed against the 1,986,709 companies that carry an activity status, not the full 1,989,709 registered, because 3,000 companies had no status classification on the cut date. The financial statement count reflects companies with at least one filed statement on record. No individual person or director is identified.
How we verified this
- Active share recomputed as 993,373 divided by 1,986,709, which equals 0.5000, or 50.0 percent.
- Active plus dormant checked as 993,373 plus 993,336, which sums to 1,986,709, the classified total.
- The active and dormant counts were confirmed to differ by only 37 companies, matching the reported near even split.
- Financial statement share recomputed as 1,239,700 divided by 1,989,709, which equals 0.623, or 62.3 percent.
- Companies without an activity status confirmed at 3,000, the difference between 1,989,709 registered and 1,986,709 classified.
