Thai Industry Codes by Survival-Rate Band: 2026 Distribution
In short
Most Thai industry codes cluster between 50 and 70 percent active: 373 of 867 codes, or 43.0 percent. A long tail of 109 codes sits below 30 percent survival. Those codes are 12.6 percent of the count but only 10.7 percent of registered companies. Below 50 percent, the picture flips: 354 codes hold 50.8 percent of the register. Count the codes and you see a bell. Count the companies and you see a register leaning toward failure.
Where do most Thai industry codes land?
Most of them land in the middle. Of 867 five-digit industry codes with at least 50 companies, 202 sit in the 50 to 60 percent active band and another 171 sit in the 60 to 70 percent band (DBD, 2026). Together that is 373 codes, or 43.0 percent of the total. The median code has a survival rate of 54.0 percent. The whole register is nearly identical at 50.0 percent active. The tail is the story, though. 109 codes, or 12.6 percent, survive at under 30 percent, and 14 of them fall below 10 percent. At the top, 31 codes clear 90 percent.

Why the code count and the register weight disagree
Small codes crowd the extremes. The 31 codes above 90 percent hold just 64,708 companies, or 3.3 percent of the register. The 14 codes below 10 percent hold 14,192 companies, and only 844 of them are active. The big codes live in the middle and lean low. The 30 to 50 percent bands hold 245 codes, or 28.3 percent, yet they carry 794,813 companies, or 40.1 percent of the register. That is why a code-level survey flatters the economy. A typical code looks healthy, but half of all companies sit in a code where fewer than half of the companies are still active.
Why this matters
Anyone screening Thai industries by survival rate should decide first whether they are counting codes or counting companies. A lender, supplier or acquirer is exposed to companies, and by that measure 50.8 percent of the register sits in codes below the 50 percent line. Codes above 90 percent look safe, but they are tiny and the registry cannot say what drives their near-perfect rate. The codes worth a closer look are the 65 in the 20 to 30 percent band. They hold 161,672 companies, which is almost as many as the three bands at 70 percent and above combined, at 173,363 companies. Volume and fragility sit together there.
Definitions
- Survival rate
- Active companies divided by all registered companies in an industry code. A 60 percent rate means 60 of every 100 registered companies are active.
- TSIC code
- A five-digit code from the Thailand Standard Industrial Classification that assigns each company to a specific line of business.
- Survival-rate band
- A ten-point range of survival rates, such as 50 to 60 percent, used to group industry codes.
- Dormant
- A registered company that is not classed as active in the registry.
- Aggregate
- A total computed over a whole group of companies, not an average of individual company figures.
Assumptions
- Only codes with 50 or more companies are included, which leaves out 361 small codes and 5,070 companies.
- Active status is as recorded by the registry and may lag real closures.
- Survival rate is a snapshot of status, not a measured lifespan or a cohort of new firms.
- The database refreshed on 17 July 2026, so figures here can differ slightly from earlier national anchors dated 7 July 2026.
Methodology
Source is the Department of Business Development registry of Thai juristic persons, as of 17 July 2026, aggregated by 5-digit TSIC industry code. Only codes with at least 50 registered companies are included, which is 867 of 1,228 codes and 1,981,639 of 1,986,709 companies with a size band, or 99.7 percent. Survival rate is active companies divided by all companies in the code. Bands are half-open, so a code at exactly 50.0 percent falls in the 50 to 60 band. Industry names are not available at this level, so codes are not named. Band survival rates are company-weighted aggregates.
How we verified this
- Band code counts 14 + 30 + 65 + 87 + 158 + 202 + 171 + 81 + 28 + 31 sum to 867, matching the total of codes with 50 or more companies.
- Band company counts sum to 1,981,639, matching the direct total for the same filter, and active counts sum to 990,741, or 49.996 percent.
- 50 to 70 percent bands: 202 + 171 = 373 codes, and 373 / 867 = 43.02 percent. Companies 482,492 + 319,700 = 802,192, and 802,192 / 1,981,639 = 40.48 percent.
- Below 30 percent: 14 + 30 + 65 = 109 codes, and 109 / 867 = 12.57 percent. Companies 14,192 + 35,407 + 161,672 = 211,271, and 211,271 / 1,981,639 = 10.66 percent.
- Below 50 percent: 109 + 87 + 158 = 354 codes, 40.83 percent. Companies 211,271 + 367,871 + 426,942 = 1,006,084, and 1,006,084 / 1,981,639 = 50.77 percent.
- 30 to 50 percent: 87 + 158 = 245 codes, 28.26 percent. Companies 367,871 + 426,942 = 794,813, and 794,813 / 1,981,639 = 40.11 percent.
- Top bands: 31 codes and 64,708 companies give 3.58 percent of codes and 3.27 percent of companies. Band 70 and above totals 173,363 companies, versus 161,672 in the 20 to 30 band.
- Band survival rate for 0 to 10 percent: 844 / 14,192 = 5.95 percent. For 90 and above: 64,409 / 64,708 = 99.54 percent.

Frequently asked questions
What survival rate is typical for a Thai industry code?
The median code has a survival rate of 54.0 percent, and 43.0 percent of codes fall between 50 and 70 percent, per DBD data as of 17 July 2026.
How many Thai industry codes have survival below 30 percent?
109 of 867 codes, or 12.6 percent, and together they contain 211,271 companies.
Why do codes and companies give different answers?
Codes are counted equally whatever their size. The largest codes cluster at 30 to 60 percent survival, so weighting by companies puts 50.8 percent of the register in codes below 50 percent.
Why are some codes above 90 percent active?
There are 31 such codes with 64,708 companies in total. The registry cannot say why, so treat them as small and possibly rule-driven groups rather than proof of durable business.
