How much business is registered in Isan?
Twenty provinces make up Thailand's Northeast, and together they register 179,476 companies (DBD, 2026). That is 9.0 percent of the 1,989,709 companies on the national registry. The share of revenue is thinner still. Northeastern firms report 2.34 trillion baht, which works out to 3.1 percent of the 76.62 trillion baht Thai companies book in total. Hold those two numbers side by side. Isan is home to roughly a third of the country's people, yet it accounts for under a tenth of its companies and barely a thirtieth of company revenue. The gap between where Thais live and where Thai business is booked is nowhere wider than here.

One region, one Bangkok, a fourfold gap
Set the whole Northeast against a single city and the imbalance sharpens. Bangkok registers 812,799 companies on its own. That is about 4.5 times the 179,476 companies spread across all twenty Isan provinces. Nakhon Ratchasima leads the region with 33,958 companies, close to a fifth of the Northeastern total, and it is still smaller than a single Bangkok district cluster. Revenue tells the same story in a sharper key. The four Isan provinces with the highest counts, Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, Ubon Ratchathani and Udon Thani, book about 1.29 trillion baht between them, more than half of everything the region reports.
Why this matters
A registered company is where formal, taxable, financeable economic activity lives. When a region that holds a third of the population carries under a tenth of the companies, it tells you a large share of Isan's economy runs outside the formal corporate ledger, in farms, in household trade, in labor that leaves for Bangkok and sends money home. NESDC gross regional product data has long shown the Northeast producing well under a tenth of national output despite its size, and the company registry now draws the same line from a different direction (NESDC, 2024). For anyone weighing where the next factory, bank branch or logistics hub should go, the reading is double edged. The Northeast is underbuilt relative to its people, which reads either as a market that never formed or as the widest runway for formal business left in the country.

- Isan
- The common name for Thailand's Northeastern region, a group of twenty provinces that together form the country's largest and most populous region.
- Share of national total
- A regional value divided by the matching countrywide value, expressed as a percentage. A 9.0 percent company share means the region holds nine of every hundred companies in Thailand.
- Gross regional product
- The total value of goods and services produced in a region in a year, the regional counterpart of gross domestic product, reported by NESDC.
Assumptions
- Companies are assigned to a province by their registered address, which may differ from where they actually operate.
- Revenue reflects only companies that filed a financial statement, so it understates total regional activity.
- Provincial revenue is shown only for provinces with a stable reported aggregate.
- The registry counts formal companies only and does not capture unincorporated farms, household businesses or informal trade.
Methodology
Figures count juristic persons on the Department of Business Development registry whose registered address falls in one of the twenty provinces of Thailand's Northeastern Isan region, drawn as of 2 July 2026. Revenue is aggregate reported revenue from filed financial statements for those companies. National totals of 1,989,709 companies and 76.62 trillion baht are the same registry's countrywide figures on the same date. Shares are computed by dividing the regional value by the national value. Provincial revenue is shown only where a stable aggregate is available.
