How do Thailand's regions compare?
Group the country into seven regions and one province wins outright. Bangkok alone holds 812,799 registered companies as of 2 July 2026 (DBD, 2026). Central Thailand, the next region, gathers 404,768 companies across 14 provinces, and that is still barely half of Bangkok. The East follows with 197,553, lifted by the industrial corridor around Rayong and Chonburi. Then the map flattens. The Northeast, the South and the North sit close together near 170,000 to 180,000 companies each, despite the Northeast covering 20 provinces and a third of the population. The West trails everyone with 41,847. So the story is not a gradient across the country. It is a capital that out-registers every rival region, and a long tail behind it.

Why the revenue gap is the real story
Company counts undersell how lopsided this is. Bangkok holds 40.9 percent of the companies but 61.5 percent of the revenue, so its firms are far bigger on average than the national norm. Run the arithmetic and a Bangkok company books about 58 million baht of revenue a year, against roughly 13 million for a company in the Northeast. The East is the quiet standout: 9.9 percent of companies but 11.5 percent of revenue, because heavy industry and export plants sit there rather than corner shops. At the other pole, the Northeast has 9.0 percent of the companies and just 3.1 percent of the revenue, a sign of many small firms and few headquarters. This matters because policy that treats provinces as equal misses the shape of the money. Thailand's registered economy is not a country of regions. It is a capital, an industrial belt beside it, and everywhere else. That concentration tracks the wider picture: the national planning agency puts Bangkok and its vicinity near a third of gross output (NESDC, 2024), and on booked company revenue the tilt is steeper still.
Definitions
- Region
- A grouping of provinces used for comparison. This page uses seven groups and treats Bangkok as its own region because it is one province with national weight.
- Registered company
- An active juristic person, mostly limited companies, recorded in the Department of Business Development registry and mapped to the province where it is registered.
- Revenue share
- A region's total booked company revenue divided by the national total of 76.62 trillion baht, expressed as a percentage.
- Revenue per company
- Regional revenue divided by the number of companies in that region, a derived average used for context rather than a figure held in the registry.
Assumptions
- Companies are assigned to a region by registered province, which may differ from where they actually operate.
- Revenue counts only companies that filed a financial statement, so regions with more non filers are understated.
- Regional totals sum to 1,986,137, slightly below the national 1,989,709 because a small number of companies lack a mapped province.
- Revenue figures are rounded to trillions of baht, so shares computed from them carry rounding of a few tenths of a percent.
Methodology
Figures aggregate every active registered juristic person in the Department of Business Development registry as of 2 July 2026, grouped into seven standard regions by the company's registered province. Bangkok is treated as its own region because it is a single province with outsized weight. Company counts are exact registry totals. Revenue is the sum of latest filed annual revenue for companies in each region, rounded to trillions of baht, so a firm that has not filed does not contribute. Shares are each region's value divided by the national total. Revenue per company is a derived ratio for context, not a registry field.
