Thai Industry Rankings: Revenue per Active vs Registered Company 2026
In short
Thirteen of 18 major industry sections change rank when revenue is divided by active rather than registered companies, as of 17 July 2026. Human health and social work drops three places, from 7th to 10th. Transportation and storage climbs three, from 10th to 7th. Mining and quarrying jumps from 4th to 2nd, at 176.72 million baht per active company. Manufacturing stays first either way.
Which sections change rank when dormant companies are removed from the denominator?
Thirteen of the 18 major sections move. Five hold their place: manufacturing, wholesale and retail, water and waste, education and other services. The biggest swing belongs to transportation and storage, which rises from 10th to 7th, with 25.26 million baht per registered company. Per active company the figure is 48.74 million baht (DBD, 2026). Human health and social work goes the other way, from 7th to 10th. It has the smallest dormant overhang of any large section, so dividing by active companies barely lifts it. Mining and quarrying has the opposite problem. Only 30.9 percent of its registered companies are active. That makes its per active revenue 3.24 times its per registered revenue.

Revenue per registered and per active company, with rank among 18 sections, as of 17 Jul 2026. Revenue is in million baht.
Why the overhang matters more than the revenue
A ranking per registered company quietly punishes sections that hold many shells. Manufacturing has 121,333 inactive companies. Wholesale and retail has 389,996. Both look smaller per head than their operating firms really are. Mining shows the pattern most sharply, with 5,691 inactive companies against 2,540 active ones. Anyone sizing a market, pricing a supplier list or choosing a sector to sell into should use the active denominator, because that is the pool of firms that can actually buy something. The registered denominator tells a different story, about how easy it is to open a company in that sector and how rarely anyone closes one. Read the two rankings together and the gap between them becomes a measure of how much of each section is dormant.
Definitions
- Registered company
- Any juristic person on the DBD register in a section, whether or not it still trades.
- Active company
- A registered company the registry classes as active, as opposed to dormant or inactive.
- Dormant overhang
- The share of a section's registered companies that are inactive. A large overhang pulls down any per registered average.
- Revenue per company
- Total section revenue divided by a company count, in million baht.
- TSIC section
- One of the 21 lettered top level groups of the Thai Standard Industrial Classification, which follows the international ISIC letters.
Assumptions
- Revenue is reported only by companies that filed a financial statement, so some sections include revenue from firms that are counted as active or inactive without a filing.
- Dividing by active companies assumes the revenue sits with active firms. Some inactive companies may still have filed past revenue.
- Active counts are summed from 5-digit codes and a few sections differ from the section table by under 100 companies. The active share uses the 5-digit totals.
- Sections with fewer than 4,000 companies are excluded from the ranks because ratios on tiny bases swing widely.
- The computed date of the rows is 17 July 2026, which is newer than the national anchors of 7 July 2026. National totals match either way.
Methodology
Source: Department of Business Development registry aggregates, with rows computed on 17 July 2026. Revenue per registered company is total reported revenue in a section divided by all registered companies in that section. Revenue per active company divides the same revenue by the count of active companies, taken by summing active counts across the 5-digit industry codes inside each section. Revenue comes only from companies that filed a financial statement, so both ratios are estimates of true per company revenue. Ranks cover the 18 sections with at least 4,000 registered companies. Public administration, households and extraterritorial bodies are excluded because they have 38, 32 and 4 companies.
How we verified this
- Sum of active companies across all 21 sections recomputed as 993,373, matching the national active total.
- Sum of section company counts recomputed as 1,986,489, matching the classified-company total.
- Mining per registered: 448,874,025,175.37 / 8,231 = 54.53 million baht. Per active: 448,874,025,175.37 / 2,540 = 176.72 million baht. Ratio 3.24.
- Transportation per registered: 2,153,938,479,253.77 / 85,273 = 25.26 million baht. Per active: / 44,190 = 48.74 million baht.
- Manufacturing per registered: 25,130,983,654,714.83 / 230,396 = 109.08 million baht. Per active: / 109,063 = 230.43 million baht.
- Mining active share recomputed as 2,540 / (2,540 + 5,691) = 30.9 percent. Human health active share 12,778 / (12,778 + 4,516) = 73.9 percent.
- Both rankings were re-sorted independently over the 18 sections. 13 sections change rank and 5 do not.
