Thailand vs Canada Companies per 1,000 Residents (2026)
In short
Thailand has 30.1 registered companies per 1,000 residents, as of 17 July 2026. Canada has 33.1 employer businesses per 1,000 residents. The two figures sit within three points of each other. Canada's wider count of employers plus non-employers reaches 121.7 per 1,000, because it includes sole proprietors. Thailand's registry counts companies only, and half of them are dormant.
How does Thailand compare with Canada?
Thailand has 1,989,709 registered companies (DBD, 2026). Spread over about 66 million residents, that is 30.15 companies per 1,000 people. Canada has 1.37 million employer businesses (Statistics Canada, 2026a). Against 41,417,056 residents, that is 33.08 per 1,000 (Statistics Canada, 2026b). The gap is small. Thailand sits at 91 percent of the Canadian employer figure. But the comparison only works if you keep the definitions straight. Canada publishes no single count of incorporated companies across federal and provincial registers. Its national business counts are built from payroll and tax records, and they do not separate corporations from sole proprietors.

Why this matters
A headline that says Thailand has as many companies as Canada has employers sounds like a story about business energy. It is partly a story about paperwork. In Thailand a one-person shop that wants a contract, a bank loan or a tax invoice often registers as a company. In Canada the same shop can stay a sole proprietor and never show up in a corporate register. Strip Thailand down to active companies and the density halves to 15.05 per 1,000. That is the honest lens for anyone sizing a Thai market. Count the companies that trade, not the ones that exist on file. Canada's 121.69 per 1,000 shows how many more small businesses a richer economy carries once informal operators are counted, and Thailand's registry has no equivalent for them.
Definitions
- Registered company
- A company listed on the Department of Business Development register, whether or not it is trading.
- Active company
- A registered company flagged as active in the registry, as opposed to dormant.
- Employer business
- A Canadian business that has paid employees and files payroll remittances with the Canada Revenue Agency.
- Non-employer business
- A Canadian business with no paid employees and annual revenue above 30,000 Canadian dollars.
- Density
- A count divided by population, scaled to 1,000 residents.
Assumptions
- Thailand's population is taken as about 66 million, so Thai densities are approximate.
- Canadian counts are for December 2025 and population for April 2026, a gap of a few months.
- Canadian business counts include unincorporated businesses, so they overstate corporate density.
- Canada's federal and provincial corporate registers are not summed here because no single published total exists.
Methodology
Thai counts come from the Department of Business Development registry as of 17 July 2026, using total registered companies, companies with a filed financial statement, and companies flagged active. Thai population is an approximate 66 million, so Thai densities are estimates. Canadian counts are Statistics Canada Canadian Business Counts for December 2025, and population is the Statistics Canada estimate for 1 April 2026. Canadian counts cover businesses, not corporations, and cannot be split by legal form. Densities are count divided by population, times 1,000.
How we verified this
- Thailand density recomputed: 1,989,709 divided by 66,000,000, times 1,000, equals 30.15.
- Thailand active density recomputed: 993,373 divided by 66,000,000, times 1,000, equals 15.05.
- Thailand filed-statement density recomputed: 1,264,734 divided by 66,000,000, times 1,000, equals 19.16.
- Canada employer density recomputed: 1,370,000 divided by 41,417,056, times 1,000, equals 33.08.
- Canada non-employer density recomputed: 3,670,000 divided by 41,417,056, times 1,000, equals 88.61. The two Canadian parts sum to 5,040,000 and 121.69 per 1,000.
- Ratio recomputed: 30.15 divided by 33.08 equals 0.911, or 91 percent.
