Thailand vs Japan: Active Companies per 1,000 Residents 2026
In short
Thailand's active company density is not close to Japan's. Thailand has 13.9 active companies per 1,000 residents as of 17 July 2026. Japan has 23.8 active filing corporations per 1,000 residents. Thailand sits at 58.1 percent of Japan's level. Closing the gap would take about 715,854 more active Thai companies. On Japan's broader 3.40 million corporation count, the gap widens to 27.4 per 1,000.
Is Thailand's active company density close to Japan's?
No, and the gap is larger than most readers expect. Thailand has 993,373 active companies (DBD, 2026) for 71,668,011 residents, which is 13.9 per 1,000 people. Japan has 2,956,717 active filing corporations for 123,975,371 residents, which is 23.8 per 1,000 people. Japan's density is 1.72 times Thailand's. Put the other way, Thailand sits at 58.1 percent of Japan's level. The earlier raw count comparison made Thailand look like a third of Japan. Per person, it is closer to three fifths. That is a real narrowing, but not a catch-up.

The per-resident arithmetic

| Active or filing corporations | 993,373 | 2,956,717 |
| Population, 2024 | 71,668,011 | 123,975,371 |
| Active per 1,000 residents | 13.9 | 23.8 |
| Density relative to Japan | 58.1% | 100% |
| Active companies at Japan's density | 1,709,227 | 2,956,717 |
| Shortfall against Japan's density | 715,854 | 0 |
Thailand from the DBD-based registry as of 17 Jul 2026. Japan from National Tax Agency statistics. Population is the World Bank 2024 estimate.
What would it take to close the gap?
Apply Japan's 23.8 per 1,000 rate to Thailand's 71,668,011 residents. The result is 1,709,227 active companies. Thailand has 993,373. The shortfall is 715,854 companies, or 72 percent more than Thailand's present active base. Three industry sections carry most of what exists today. Wholesale and retail holds 326,070 active companies, which is 32.8 percent of the total. Construction holds 120,488, or 12.1 percent. Manufacturing holds 109,063, or 11.0 percent. Together those three make up 55.9 percent of Thailand's active companies. Any climb toward Japan's density would have to come from somewhere. The existing mix says trade, building and making are where Thai incorporation is already concentrated.
Why the definitions matter
Japan has more than one official count, and the choice moves the answer. The Corporation Sample Survey figure of 2,956,717 counts corporations that filed a tax return. The National Tax Agency's wider FY2023 corporate tax statistics count 3,401,205 corporations (National Tax Agency, 2024). On that larger base Japan reaches 27.4 per 1,000, which is 1.98 times Thailand's active rate. Thailand's own active label is also an administrative one. It marks companies in the registry aggregate that carry a current size classification and are not flagged dormant. Neither side is a clean audit of who trades today. The honest reading is a range. Japan runs between 1.7 and 2.0 times Thailand's active density, depending on which Japanese count a reader trusts.
Why this matters
Raw counts flatter small registers and punish large ones, so per-resident rates are the fair test. By that test Thailand is neither tiny nor close. It sits well past halfway to Japan, an older and richer economy, yet still needs roughly 716 thousand more active firms to match. That frames the real policy question. Thailand's active share is already half of its register, so cleaning the books will not close the gap. Only new, surviving companies will. Watch active density, not the headline registry total, as the number that shows whether Thai business formation is catching up.
Definitions
- Active company
- In Thailand, a company that carries a current size classification and is not flagged as dormant in the registry aggregate.
- Active filing corporation
- In Japan, a corporation that submitted a tax return for the year, as counted in the National Tax Agency Corporation Sample Survey.
- Per 1,000 residents
- A count divided by population and multiplied by 1,000, which lets countries of different size be compared fairly.
- Dormant company
- A company that remains on the register but is not flagged active, counted separately from the active total.
- TSIC
- The Thai Standard Industrial Classification, which groups companies into lettered industry sections and five-digit codes.
Assumptions
- Thailand's data was computed on 17 July 2026, while Japan's counts cover fiscal year 2023, so the periods differ.
- Thailand's active label and Japan's tax-filing label are different administrative definitions and are not identical concepts.
- Japan publishes more than one corporation count, so the result is shown as a range.
- Population figures are World Bank 2024 estimates for both countries and would shift slightly with newer counts.
Methodology
Thailand's active company count of 993,373 comes from the DBD-based registry aggregate by five-digit TSIC code, with data computed on 17 July 2026. Active means a company with a current size classification that is not flagged dormant. Japan's 2,956,717 active filing corporations is the National Tax Agency Corporation Sample Survey figure for fiscal year 2023, as used on the sibling registry page. Japan's 3,401,205 is the corporation count in the National Tax Agency's FY2023 corporate tax statistics. Population figures are the World Bank 2024 estimates. Per 1,000 rates were computed by the author by dividing each count by population and multiplying by 1,000. Counts for the two countries are drawn from different years and administrative systems, so the comparison is directional.
How we verified this
- 993,373 divided by 71,668,011 equals 0.013861, times 1,000 equals 13.86, confirming Thailand's 13.9 active companies per 1,000 residents.
- 2,956,717 divided by 123,975,371 equals 0.023849, times 1,000 equals 23.85, confirming Japan's 23.8 active filers per 1,000 residents.
- 23.849 divided by 13.861 equals 1.7206, confirming Japan's density is 1.72 times Thailand's.
- 13.861 divided by 23.849 equals 0.5812, confirming Thailand sits at 58.1 percent of Japan's density.
- 0.023849 times 71,668,011 equals 1,709,227, and 1,709,227 minus 993,373 equals 715,854, confirming the shortfall.
- 715,854 divided by 993,373 equals 0.7206, confirming the shortfall is 72 percent of today's active base.
- 3,401,205 divided by 123,975,371 equals 0.027435, times 1,000 equals 27.4, and 27.435 divided by 13.861 equals 1.979, confirming the 1.98 times ratio.
- Active counts by TSIC section summed to 993,373, matching the tsic table total. Wholesale and retail 326,070 divided by 993,373 equals 32.8 percent, construction 120,488 equals 12.1 percent, manufacturing 109,063 equals 11.0 percent, and the three sum to 555,621 or 55.9 percent.
