Thailand vs UK: New Companies vs Net Register Growth 2026

Updated 18 September 2026Data as of 17 July 2026Verified

In short

Thailand added 128,617 new companies in 2025, more raw additions than the entire growth of the United Kingdom's company register in its 2025 to 2026 financial year. The UK's whole register expanded by just 51,258 companies net, despite booking 815,277 fresh incorporations, because 787,120 companies dissolved in the same twelve months. That gives Thailand's single year of new registrations about 2.51 times the size of the UK's entire net expansion. The UK's total register still holds 5,479,045 companies, about 2.75 times Thailand's 1,989,709, so absolute scale and yearly net growth are telling two different stories.

How does Thailand's 2025 crop of new companies compare with the UK's whole register growth?

Thailand's Department of Business Development recorded 128,617 new company registrations in 2025 (DBD, 2026). The United Kingdom's entire company register grew by only 51,258 companies net across its 2025 to 2026 financial year (Companies House, 2026). Divide one figure by the other and Thailand's single year of new registrations comes to 2.51 times the UK's whole annual net expansion. That gap exists even though the UK books far more gross activity. Companies House registered 815,277 new incorporations in the same twelve months, more than six times Thailand's count. Almost all of that growth then disappeared. UK dissolutions reached 787,120 in the same period. That equals 96.55 percent of incorporations, so the register barely moved on a net basis. Thailand does not publish a matching dissolution count in this dataset, so its 128,617 figure is a gross count too, but it still stands on its own against a UK net figure that gross incorporations alone would have dwarfed.

Registration counts as of 17 Jul 2026 for Thailand and the financial year to 31 March 2026 for the UK.

Why this matters

Absolute counts change the story that growth rates tell on their own. Thailand's new company registrations also grew faster than the UK's incorporations in percentage terms, and that comparison lives on a sibling page. Percentage growth on a smaller base can still turn into a bigger raw number, and that is exactly what happened here. Thailand's 128,617 new companies in 2025 still outweigh the UK's entire net expansion for the year. The UK's total register nonetheless holds 5,479,045 companies against Thailand's 1,989,709, a gap of about 2.75 times. The UK figure carries a warning for anyone reading only the incorporation count. The UK's register added 815,277 companies in the year. It also lost 787,120 in the same period, which makes it a high churn register rather than a growing crop of new firms, where a large share of new entrants do not last past their first filing cycle. Thailand's registry has no comparable dissolution count published in this dataset, so its 128,617 figure should be read as a floor on business creation, not a confirmed net figure. For anyone sizing up either market from outside, raw net additions tell a sharper story than either country's headline growth percentage.

Definitions

New company registration
A juristic entity's first recorded registration in a country's official company registry within a given reporting year.
Net register growth
The change in the total number of companies on a register between two dates, equal to new entries minus removals and other adjustments.
Incorporation
The UK term for registering a new company with Companies House, roughly equivalent to a Thai company's founding year at the Department of Business Development.
Dissolution
The formal removal of a company from the UK register, typically after it is struck off, wound up or otherwise closed.
Financial year ending, FYE
The UK government's reporting period running from April 1 to March 31 of the following year, used by Companies House instead of the calendar year.

Assumptions

Methodology

Thailand's new company count comes from the Department of Business Development registry, aggregated by the calendar year a company was founded, as of 17 July 2026. It counts every juristic entity registered in 2025 regardless of whether it later became active or stayed dormant, and this dataset does not track Thai dissolutions, so the figure is a gross count. The UK figures come from Companies House official statistics for the financial year running April 2025 to March 2026, covering incorporations, dissolutions and the resulting net change in total register size. UK totals include all company types on the register, not only private limited companies, and are published estimates that Companies House may revise in later statistical releases.

Frequently asked questions

How many companies did Thailand add in 2025?

Thailand registered 128,617 new companies in 2025, according to the Department of Business Development (DBD, 2026).

How much did the UK's company register grow in the same period?

The UK's entire register grew by only 51,258 companies net in its financial year to March 2026, even though 815,277 new companies were incorporated, because 787,120 companies dissolved in the same period (Companies House, 2026).

Why did the UK add so many more companies but grow so little?

UK dissolutions in FYE2026 reached 787,120, equal to 96.55 percent of the 815,277 incorporations that year, so nearly every new company was offset by one leaving the register.

Is the UK's register still bigger than Thailand's overall?

Yes. The UK holds 5,479,045 companies against Thailand's 1,989,709, about 2.75 times the size, even though Thailand's 2025 registrations alone outsized the UK's entire net growth for the year.
