Thailand vs US New Business Formation per 1,000 Residents (2026)

Updated 1 October 2026Data as of 17 July 2026Verified

In short

Thailand registered 128,617 new companies in 2025, about 1.95 per 1,000 residents. The United States logged 5.62 million business applications, about 16.4 per 1,000. That is a gap of roughly 8.4 times. The gap is partly definitional, because a US application can be a one-person side business and a Thai registration is a juristic company. Thai formation is still rising, up 5.7 percent on 2024.

Does Thailand start fewer businesses than the United States?

On paper, yes, and by a wide margin. Thailand's registry shows 128,617 companies founded in 2025 (DBD, 2026). Spread across roughly 66 million residents, that is 1.95 new companies per 1,000 people. The US Census Bureau counted about 5.62 million business applications in the same year (U.S. Census Bureau, 2026). Across roughly 342 million residents, that works out to 16.43 per 1,000. The American rate is 8.43 times the Thai one. Do not read that as eight times the entrepreneurial energy. The two numbers count different things, and the next sections show where the definitions part ways.

Why the gap is smaller than it looks

A US business application is a filing for a tax identification number. Anyone with a freelance gig, a rental property or an online shop can file one. Thailand has a parallel world of sole traders and shop owners who never appear in a company registry at all. Our count only sees juristic companies, which are the legal entities that file financial statements. A fair match would put Thai commercial registrations and ordinary individual traders next to the American total, and that data sits outside this registry. So 1.95 is a floor for Thai business formation, not a full measure.

Why this matters

The direction of travel is the better story. Thai company founding climbed from 68,500 in 2015 to 128,617 in 2025. That is a rise of 87.8 percent. Founding dipped to 112,461 in 2023 after the 2021 peak, then recovered for two straight years. Anyone who sizes the Thai market by borrowing a US benchmark will overshoot, because the two series measure different things. Compare Thailand with itself first. Treat the US rate as a rough upper bound for how dense formation gets when filing a business costs almost nothing.

Definitions

Juristic company
A legal entity registered with the DBD, separate from its owners. Sole traders are not included.
Business application
A US filing for an employer identification number. It signals an intent to start a business and does not mean the business is active.
Rate per 1,000 residents
The count of new businesses divided by population, multiplied by 1,000.
Founding year
The calendar year in which a company was registered, in the Gregorian calendar.

Assumptions

Methodology

Thai counts come from the Department of Business Development registry as of 17 July 2026, grouped by the year each company was founded. They count registered juristic companies only. The US figure is the 2025 annual total of business applications from the Census Bureau Business Formation Statistics, rounded to 5.62 million. Population denominators are rounded estimates of about 66 million for Thailand and 342 million for the United States, and they are assumptions, not registry data. Rates are counts divided by population, times 1,000.
