Thailand's Median Province by Company Count in 2026
In short
Phetchaburi is the median province in Thailand's company registry, sitting at rank 39 of 77 with 6,728 registered companies. Chaiyaphum ties it exactly, also at 6,728. Thirty eight provinces count more companies and thirty seven count fewer. Bangkok tops the ranking at 812,799 companies, over 120 times the median figure. Mae Hong Son sits at the bottom with 1,569. The median tells a plainer story than either extreme, since most Thai provinces cluster far closer to Phetchaburi than to Bangkok.
Which province sits exactly in the middle?
Sort all 77 Thai provinces by registered company count, from Bangkok's 812,799 down to Mae Hong Son's 1,569, and the middle position, rank 39, lands on Phetchaburi with 6,728 companies (DBD, 2026). Chaiyaphum matches it to the exact company, also registering 6,728, so the two provinces share the midpoint of the national ranking. Thirty eight provinces count more companies than that figure and thirty seven count fewer. Bangkok alone holds over 120 times as many companies as the median province. The median province in turn holds about four times as many as Mae Hong Son at the bottom. Extremes make headlines, but Phetchaburi is what a typical Thai province actually looks like on paper.

Why the middle matters more than the edges
Bangkok and Mae Hong Son get quoted constantly because they anchor a ranking, but a median tells a business planner something the extremes cannot. A company scouting distribution partners, franchise territory or a regional office gets a distorted picture from Bangkok's 812,799 companies, since no other Thai province comes close. Phetchaburi's 6,728 is a far more honest stand-in for what a mid-sized Thai province supports commercially. The tie with Chaiyaphum adds a second layer to the story. Phetchaburi's registered companies together reported 91.7 billion baht in revenue. Chaiyaphum's companies reported 70.0 billion. That gap runs to 31.1 percent despite an identical company count in both provinces, most likely reflecting Phetchaburi's coastal tourism and proximity to greater Bangkok against Chaiyaphum's inland, agriculture-heavy base. Equal company counts do not mean equal commercial weight, and the median is the clearest place in the whole ranking to see that split.
Definitions
- Median province
- The province that sits at the exact middle position when all provinces are sorted by a chosen measure, here company count. With 77 provinces the middle position is rank 39.
- Rank
- A province's position in the sorted list of all 77 provinces by registered company count, with rank 1 holding the most companies.
- Registered companies
- Juristic persons recorded in the Department of Business Development registry under a given province, regardless of whether they have filed a financial statement or remain active.
- Aggregate revenue
- The sum of reported revenue across all companies in a province that have filed a financial statement, not an average of individual company figures.
Assumptions
- Province is assigned by each company's registered address in the DBD filing, which may differ from where the business actually operates.
- Revenue totals cover only companies that filed a financial statement, while company counts include all registered entities, so a revenue-per-company figure would mix two different denominators and is not presented here.
- A small number of registry rows carry no province code and are excluded from the 77-province ranking, so the ranking covers 1,986,137 of the 1,989,709 total registered companies.
Methodology
Company counts and revenue totals are drawn from the Department of Business Development registry aggregate table by province, as of 17 July 2026. A province's rank is its position when all 77 provinces are sorted by registered company count from highest to lowest. With 77 provinces, the median sits at rank 39, the exact middle position. Two provinces, Phetchaburi and Chaiyaphum, both register 6,728 companies and therefore share that rank. Revenue figures are aggregate totals of filed financial statements linked to each province and are not restricted to companies with any particular size or status.
How we verified this
- Counted 77 provinces with a non-null province name in the registry table, confirming the 77-province ranking used for the median.
- Computed the median position as 77 plus 1, divided by 2, equal to rank 39, then confirmed by row number that rank 39 lands on Chaiyaphum and Phetchaburi, both at 6,728 companies.
- Confirmed 38 provinces rank above position 39 and 37 rank below it, summing with the tied pair to the full 77.
- Recomputed Bangkok's multiple over the median as 812,799 divided by 6,728, equal to about 120.8.
- Recomputed the median province's multiple over the smallest province as 6,728 divided by 1,569, equal to about 4.3.
- Recomputed the revenue gap between the tied provinces as 91,717,025,574.72 minus 69,953,716,777.00, divided by 69,953,716,777.00, equal to about 31.1 percent.
- Recomputed Phetchaburi's share of the national company count as 6,728 divided by 1,989,709, equal to about 0.34 percent.
