Why the south's ranking is not the tourism ranking
Phuket and Surat Thani are what most people picture when they think of southern business. Together they hold 92,718 companies, which is 51.8 percent of the south's registered companies. Yet they earn 7.7 and 10.3 million baht per company. The registry does not split these provinces by business type, but tourism-heavy economies tend to hold many small firms. Revenue per company rewards the opposite profile, a smaller number of firms that move large volumes. Chumphon has just 5,350 companies. Its 153.5 billion baht of revenue is enough to put it first. The same arithmetic lifts Songkhla, which combines 28,543 companies with 657.2 billion baht, the largest revenue total in the south.
Why this matters
A company count tells you how many doors there are. Revenue per company tells you how much trade runs through each one. For a lender, a supplier or a site-selection team in the south, the two answers point to different provinces. The south holds 9.0 percent of Thailand's companies. It holds only 2.92 percent of national revenue. So the south averages 13.1 million baht per company, against 40.3 million baht nationally, a figure lifted by Bangkok. Inside that modest total, the spread from first to last is nearly fourfold. Treat the ranking as a guide to business mix, not a verdict on success. One caveat matters most: DBD books revenue at the registered province, so a head office registered in one place and operating in another shifts the picture. Official output by place, published by the National Statistical Office, measures a different thing and will not match.
Definitions
- Revenue per company
- Total reported revenue of a province divided by its number of registered companies, in million baht.
- Registered province
- The province of a company's registered address in the DBD registry, which may differ from where it operates.
- Aggregate
- A total or ratio computed over all companies in a group, not an average of individual company figures.
Assumptions
- Revenue per company is dominated by large firms, so a few big companies can lift a small province.
- Registered address may differ from the place of operation.
- The denominator includes companies that filed no financial statement.
- The 14-province definition of the south excludes Prachuap Khiri Khan.
Methodology
Revenue per company is total reported revenue divided by the number of registered companies in a province, drawn from the Department of Business Development registry. The aggregate rows were computed on 17 July 2026 and are described here as of that date. The south is defined as 14 provinces: Chumphon, Ranong, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Krabi, Phang-nga, Phuket, Trang, Phatthalung, Satun, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. Prachuap Khiri Khan is excluded because it is usually grouped with the west. The denominator counts every registered company, including those that filed no statement, so the ratio understates revenue per filing company. Province is the registered address.
How we verified this
- Chumphon: 153,527,454,323.69 baht divided by 5,350 companies gives 28.70 million baht per company.
- Songkhla: 657,219,959,616.23 divided by 28,543 gives 23.03 million baht. Phuket: 404,446,017,570.47 divided by 52,557 gives 7.70. Surat Thani: 412,316,401,146.53 divided by 40,161 gives 10.27.
- Chumphon to Phuket ratio: 28.70 divided by 7.70 gives 3.73 times.
- Southern totals across 14 provinces: 179,033 companies and 2,342.1 billion baht, giving 13.08 million baht per company.
- Share of national companies: 179,033 divided by 1,989,709 gives 9.0 percent. Share of national revenue: 2,342.1 billion divided by 80,146.5 billion gives 2.92 percent.
- National average: 80,146,498,562,464 divided by 1,989,709 gives 40.28 million baht per company.
- Phuket plus Surat Thani: 52,557 plus 40,161 gives 92,718, which is 51.8 percent of 179,033.
