How does Thailand compare with its Nordic peers?

Thailand sits well below all three. The DBD registry holds 1,989,709 companies (DBD, 2026), which works out to 30.1 per 1,000 residents. Denmark comes next at 40.4. Finland follows at 52.5. Sweden leads at 76.2, a density 2.5 times Thailand's. The result is surprising because Thailand has the largest register of the four by a wide margin. Its population is simply far larger. Sweden has 807,544 limited companies for about 10.6 million people. Thailand has about 2.5 times as many entries for about 6 times as many people.

Why this matters

A company count per head is a rough gauge of how easily a society turns an idea into a legal entity. High-income, high-trust economies tend to incorporate small ventures, from one-person consultancies to holding vehicles. Thailand's density is lower even though its register is padded by dormant entries. About 1.26 million of the 1.99 million registered companies have filed a financial statement. That is 63.6 percent. So the true gap in active, reporting firms is wider than the headline suggests. Per head, Thailand has 19.2 reporting companies for every 1,000 residents. Read this as a gauge of formalisation, not of national wealth. Many Thai enterprises operate as sole proprietorships or community businesses and never appear in a company register at all. The comparison is also lopsided in the other direction, because Nordic registers keep dormant shells too. Treat the ranking as direction, not precision.

Assumptions

Methodology

Thailand figures come from the Department of Business Development registry as aggregated in Max Data, with rows computed on 17 July 2026. Registered companies is the total entity count of 1,989,709. Reporting companies is the 1,264,734 with a filed financial statement. Nordic counts are published limited-company totals from national registers: Bolagsverket for Sweden as cited in 2026, the Finnish Patent and Registration Office for January 2025, and Statistics Denmark for A/S plus ApS in 2022. Reference years differ, so densities are approximate. Population figures are rounded estimates of about 66.0 million for Thailand, 10.6 million for Sweden, 5.6 million for Finland and 6.0 million for Denmark.
