Surin: Thailand's Median Province by Revenue in 2026
In short
Surin is Thailand's median province by revenue, ranking exactly 39th of 77 provincial jurisdictions with about 111.9 billion baht in total company revenue. Bangkok tops the list at 50.5 trillion baht, more than 450 times the median figure. Mae Hong Son sits at the bottom with just 6.1 billion baht. Thirty eight provinces report more revenue than Surin and thirty eight report less, an exact split with no tie at the middle. National business coverage rarely mentions Surin, yet on this measure it is the most typical province in the country.
Which province sits at the exact revenue midpoint?
Thailand's company registry splits into 77 provincial jurisdictions, 76 provinces plus Bangkok, ranked here by total company revenue. The middle position, rank 39, lands on Surin at 111.86 billion baht (DBD, 2026). With 77 distinct revenue totals and no tie at that rank, the median falls on a single province, not an average of two. Thirty eight jurisdictions report more revenue than Surin and thirty eight report less. Bangkok sits at the top with 50.5 trillion baht. That figure runs more than 450 times Surin's total. Mae Hong Son anchors the bottom at 6.1 billion baht. Surin itself rarely appears in national business coverage, best known outside the region for its elephant festival and its silk weaving, yet by this measure it is the most representative province Thailand has.

Surin sits at the exact midpoint of the ranking. The gap between the top few jurisdictions and everyone else, including the median, dwarfs the gap from the median down to the bottom.

Why the median beats the average here
The mean revenue across all 77 jurisdictions comes out to about 1.04 trillion baht. That is more than nine times what Surin actually reports. This gap exists because Bangkok alone accounts for about 63 percent of all reported company revenue in Thailand, dragging the average far above what any typical province earns. A median cannot be pulled around like that, since it only cares about position in the ranking, not the size of the numbers at the extremes. That makes Surin, not the national average, the honest answer to what a normal Thai province generates in company revenue. Surin's own 7,666 companies average about 14.6 million baht in revenue each. Bangkok's 812,799 companies average about 62.2 million baht each. Bangkok's lead comes from both a larger base of firms and a richer revenue mix per firm. Surin sits within Thailand's northeastern Isan region, an area that national statisticians have long placed behind Bangkok and the eastern seaboard in provincial output (NESDC, 2025). A revenue ranking built from company filings tells much the same story from a different angle.
Definitions
- Median province
- The province that sits at the exact middle position when all provincial jurisdictions are sorted by a chosen measure, here total company revenue. With 77 jurisdictions the middle position is rank 39.
- Total revenue
- The sum of reported revenue from the latest filed financial statement across every company registered under a province, not an average of individual company figures.
- Provincial jurisdiction
- One of Thailand's 76 provinces or the Bangkok metropolis, treated here as 77 comparable geographic units in the company registry.
- Mean
- The simple average of a set of values, calculated by summing them and dividing by the count. A mean can be pulled far from the typical value by a small number of extreme entries, unlike a median.
Assumptions
- Province is assigned by each company's registered address in the DBD filing, which may differ from where the business actually operates.
- Revenue totals cover only companies that filed a financial statement, so the ranking reflects reporting companies rather than every registered entity.
- A small number of registry rows carry no identifiable province and are excluded from the 77-jurisdiction ranking, so the ranking covers 1,986,137 of the 1,989,709 total registered companies.
- Gross provincial product figures cited for regional context are a separate national accounts measure and are not combined with the revenue totals in this analysis.
Methodology
Total revenue is the sum of reported revenue on the latest filed financial statement for every company registered under a given province, drawn from the Department of Business Development registry as of 17 July 2026. All 77 provincial jurisdictions, the 76 provinces plus Bangkok, are ranked from highest to lowest total revenue, and the middle position of that ranking, rank 39, is the median. With 77 distinct revenue values and no tie at rank 39, the median lands on a single province without any averaging step. A small number of registry rows carry no identifiable province and are excluded from the 77-jurisdiction ranking. This revenue measure is not the same concept as gross provincial product, which is a value added figure published separately by national statisticians and is cited here only for regional context, not combined with the revenue totals.
How we verified this
- Counted 77 provincial jurisdictions with a non-null province code in the registry table and confirmed this is the full ranking base for the median.
- Sorted all 77 jurisdictions by total revenue descending using a row number, and confirmed row 39, the position at 77 plus 1 divided by 2, lands on Surin at 111,864,526,055.04 baht with no other jurisdiction sharing that value.
- Confirmed 38 jurisdictions rank above position 39 and 38 rank below it, summing with Surin itself to the full 77.
- Recomputed Bangkok's multiple over Surin as 50,545,042,342,775.37 divided by 111,864,526,055.04, equal to about 451.8.
- Recomputed Surin's share of national total revenue as 111,864,526,055.04 divided by 80,146,498,562,463.62, equal to about 0.14 percent.
- Recomputed the mean revenue across the 77 jurisdictions as 80,057,095,437,018.40 divided by 77, equal to about 1.04 trillion baht, then divided that mean by Surin's revenue to get a mean to median ratio of about 9.3.
- Recomputed average revenue per company as 111,864,526,055.04 divided by 7,666 for Surin, about 14.6 million baht, versus 50,545,042,342,775.37 divided by 812,799 for Bangkok, about 62.2 million baht.
