The Giant vs the Average Firm, by Thai Industry 2026
In short
Wholesale and retail trade shows the widest gap of any Thai industry section, where the top firm earns 58,694 times the sector's average company revenue as of 7 July 2026. Hua Seng Heng Commoditas Company Limited reported 5.56 trillion baht in revenue. The sector's average company revenue is just 94.67 million baht. Administrative and support follows at 9,694 times. Manufacturing ranks third at 8,926 times. Water and waste management shows the narrowest gap among sizeable sectors, at 129 times. An industry's size tells you little about how lopsided it is inside.
How much bigger is the top firm than the typical company in its own industry?
In wholesale and retail trade, Thailand's largest sector by company count, the answer is not a modest premium. It is a chasm. Hua Seng Heng Commoditas Company Limited, a gold and commodities trading firm, reported 5.56 trillion baht in revenue as of 7 July 2026 (DBD, 2026). The sector average across filing companies is just 94.67 million baht. Divide one by the other and the top firm earns 58,694 times the average company in its own sector. That is the widest gap of Thailand's 21 industries measured. Administrative and support comes next at 9,694 times, led by a mobile network operator. Manufacturing follows at 8,926 times, led by the national oil and gas company. Information and communication follows at 5,506 times. At the other end, among sectors with a meaningful number of filing companies, water and waste management shows the narrowest gap at 129 times. The wholesale and retail multiple carries one honest caveat. Bullion and commodities traders often report the gross value of what they trade as revenue rather than the value they add, which can make a gold trader's top line look far larger than a factory or a shop earns for comparable economic activity.

Shown for the 12 sections with the widest gaps. The scale runs from 58,694 times down to 769 times within this group alone, so a shared axis compresses the smaller bars. The three tiny sections, public administration, households, and extraterritorial organizations, are excluded here because each has fewer than 20 companies with filed data.

Top company revenue, average company revenue among filers, and the multiple, as of 7 Jul 2026.
Why the gap matters more than the ranking
A separate Max Data page already asked what share of each sector's total revenue the top firm holds, and mining topped that ranking at 19.68 percent (DBD, 2026). This page asks a different question and gets a different answer. Instead of comparing the top firm to the whole sector, it compares the top firm to the sector's own average company, and wholesale and retail trade wins by a wide margin. That distinction matters for anyone reading these numbers as a guide to competition or credit risk. A sector can hold a modest revenue share for its top firm and still contain an enormous size gap between the giant and everyone else, because the sector has hundreds of thousands of small companies pulling the average down. Wholesale and retail is exactly that case. It has 715,976 registered companies, more than any other section, and most of them are small shops and traders whose combined average revenue looks tiny next to a national-scale gold trader. Economists studying superstar firms in advanced economies describe the same pattern, a small number of highly productive firms pulling far ahead of a long tail of ordinary competitors (Autor et al., 2020). Thailand's registry shows that pattern in stark relief in its biggest sector. Lenders, suppliers, and policymakers who treat a sector average as a proxy for a typical business should treat that average with real caution once a multiple this large is in play.
Definitions
- Average company revenue
- Total revenue reported by companies in a section that filed a financial statement, divided by the number of those filing companies. It excludes companies that never filed.
- Multiple
- The top company's revenue divided by the section's average company revenue. A multiple of 100 means the top firm reports one hundred times the average company's revenue.
- TSIC section
- One of 21 fixed ISIC letter categories the DBD uses to classify a company's main registered business activity, from A for agriculture through U for extraterritorial organizations.
- Companies with filed data
- The count of companies in a section that submitted a financial statement, the denominator used for average revenue and net margin.
Assumptions
- A company is assigned to exactly one section, the one tied to its primary registered activity, even if it operates across more than one industry.
- Average revenue is computed only from companies that filed a financial statement, so unfiled and dormant companies do not pull the average down further.
- Public administration, households, and extraterritorial organizations have very small filer counts, 17, 11 and 3 respectively, so their multiples are included for completeness but should not be read as statistically stable.
- Revenue for trading firms in gold and commodities can reflect gross trading value rather than value added, which likely overstates their scale relative to a manufacturer or service firm booking comparable economic activity.
Methodology
For each of the 21 TSIC industry sections in the Department of Business Development registry, the multiple divides the section's top company revenue by its average company revenue among companies that filed a financial statement, using the market_section_insight aggregate as of 7 July 2026. Average revenue already restricts to filing companies rather than every registered entity, so the multiple measures genuine scale spread among reporting businesses, not a gap caused by unfiled companies. Public administration, households, and extraterritorial organizations carry very small filer counts, 17, 11 and 3 respectively, and their multiples are included for completeness but are not statistically stable.
How we verified this
- Recomputed the wholesale and retail multiple directly: 5,556,701,724,240.86 baht divided by 94,671,998.71 baht equals 58,694, matching the headline figure.
- Cross checked the average revenue field against a simple total: 38,739,213,839,007.41 baht divided by 424,209 companies with filed data equals 91,321,056 baht, close to the reported 94,671,999 baht average, confirming both are filer based rather than counting every registered entity.
- Summed entity_count across all 21 sections and got 1,986,489, matching the verified national count of companies with a classified industry section.
- Re-sorted all 21 sections by multiple in descending order and confirmed wholesale and retail ranks first at 58,694 and extraterritorial organizations ranks last among comparisons at 3.

Frequently asked questions
Which Thai industry has the biggest gap between its top firm and its average company?
Wholesale and retail trade, where the top firm earns 58,694 times the sector's average company revenue as of 7 July 2026.
Why is the wholesale and retail multiple so extreme?
The top firm is a gold and commodities trader, and firms in that business often report the gross value traded as revenue rather than value added, which inflates the reported top line next to a typical shop or trading company.
Which sector has the smallest gap between its top firm and its average company?
Among sectors with a meaningful number of filing companies, water and waste management has the narrowest gap, at 129 times.
Is this the same as asking which industry one company dominates the most?
No. A separate page ranks sectors by the top firm's share of total sector revenue. This page compares the top firm to the sector's own average company instead, and the two rankings do not match.
