Small company count, total companies and small share by 5-digit TSIC code, as of 17 Jul 2026. Small share is small companies divided by all companies in the code.

Big counts and high small shares are different things

Code 41002 tops the count, yet only 17.2 percent of its 165,550 companies are small. Most of the rest are micro firms. Retail code 47732 tells the opposite story. It has 6,397 small companies, and they are 42.5 percent of its 15,036 firms. Construction supplies three of the top ten codes: 41002, 43210 and 41001. Together they hold 44,111 small firms, or 42.74 percent of the top ten total. Wholesale and retail also takes three places, and real estate takes two.

Why this matters

The small band is the middle rung of the size ladder, and it is where a micro firm either grows or stalls. A supplier, lender or landlord who wants small customers does not need to search 1,228 codes. Five of them cover more than one small firm in every seven. The ranking also shows that raw counts mislead. A code with a huge number of micro shells can top a list of small firms without being a small-firm industry at all. Read the count and the share side by side before sizing any market, because the biggest code is not the most small-firm-heavy one.

Definitions

Aggregate
A total or ratio computed across many companies, not a figure for any single company.

Assumptions

Methodology

Counts come from the Department of Business Development registry, aggregated per 5-digit TSIC code with a computation date of 17 July 2026. A company is small if it falls in the small size band assigned in the registry. Shares use the 441,008 small companies summed across all 1,228 codes as the denominator. Sub-industry names are not available at the 5-digit level, so codes are shown with their parent industry section. The sum of codes is 80 above the national size band total of 440,928 because of registry refresh timing.
