Why the two rankings split

A company count measures how many doors are registered. Revenue measures how much money flows through them. Udon Thani has the longer list, but its average firm is smaller. Ubon Ratchathani has a shorter list, and its average firm books 37.5 percent more revenue than Udon's. The pattern looks like Nakhon Ratchasima in miniature. Ubon's 15.34 million baht per company sits close to the Isan leader's 15.74 million. Udon's 11.16 million sits below Khon Kaen's 13.29 million. Neither number says one city is the better place to do business. It says a sales team counting prospects and a lender counting turnover would draw different maps of the same region. Provincial output is also tracked separately by the national planning agency, so readers who need gross provincial product should consult that series (NESDC, 2026).

Why this matters

Count-based targeting will send you to Udon Thani first. Revenue-based targeting will send you to Ubon Ratchathani first. A supplier chasing volume of small accounts has a larger pool in Udon. A supplier chasing fewer, heavier accounts finds richer ground in Ubon. Both cities are still small beside the leader, since Nakhon Ratchasima alone holds 33,958 companies. Treat the pair as two different kinds of regional market, not as one ranking with a winner.

Assumptions

Methodology

Company counts and revenue are provincial aggregates from the Department of Business Development registry, drawn from the Max Data aggregate tables computed on 17 July 2026 and described as of that date. Companies are counted by registered province. Revenue is the sum of revenue from filed financial statements, so provinces where fewer companies file will understate true turnover. Revenue per company is total province revenue divided by all registered companies in that province, not only filers, so it is an estimate of average scale and not a measured average. Figures are in baht and rounded to two decimals in billions.
